Flats are a plus but what the hell am i going to do with that neck. it's fugly. rw with what appears to be grey cement where the frets were. Is there an ebanol type product I can coat the neck with? This is going sour.
Never mind. Deal's off. Thanks the same.

With the modifications and new strings I probably have all of $200 into it. | "Usable" is relative! The factory ones are a bit short for the wide string spacing and it makes the G and B strings weak. So I installed a NOS Fender P-bass 5 pickup set (and new pickguard to match). But remember that a P-bass pickup is hum-cancelling. Thus, if you don't want single coil hum, you have to replace the J bridge pickup with one that is also hum-cancelling. I used a Dimarzio Ultra J. It's almost a drop-in except you have to Dremel the ends of the bridge cavity because it's just a tad longer than the factory. These are a positively KILLER pickup combo!
Only other mods were to file a couple of high frets detected with my trusty fret rocker and I wired a push-pull volume switch that changes the P-bass pickup halves from series to parallel. I don't recommend the latter mod. just wire in series and leave it and you'll be happy.
And I LOVE that P-bass neck! It's like being home, which is odd given that my Fender Deluxe Jazz V neck is my least favorite neck! You'd really have to spend some money to get a bass that sounds and plays this nice! And it even sounds great with other strings on it, but now of course it has GHS flats.
And I got mine from BillyB from LZ who was nice enough to offer to sell me one of his when I was whining on TB about just missing one at Music-go-Round. The end result is worth the mods! |

Anyone got any tips for the above mod's?

If you scroll back and look at photos, you'll see what others have done for pickups. On my Shoreline Gold Precision Special 5, I made room with a router and installed a Wilkinson 5-string P-Bass pickup that can be purchased cheaply on eBay. Others have used real Fender pickups (I've seen those on eBay as well).
Personally, I don't really ever use the bridge pickup so the stock one is fine for me.
My 5-string ProTone Precision is stock.
I bought my Satin Walnut one pre-modified (the previous owner used the same 5-string P-pickup that I did but in Reverse P layout).

... | Cool! I was thinking about going Black on the hardware on my bass (I really don't like gold hardware). Now I have proof how great it looks!

Saw this neck for sale and figured why not?

... | I just noticed that you have different pickups on the 6. How do the Basslines compare to the stock soapbars?

Just did some serial # dating and it's a 2000 with plastic still on the pickguard.. virtually unplayed! No kidding, with hardshell case and a strap for $120. I found the needle in the CL haystack!
Bassbenj... the Dimarzio Ultra J is a close fit for the bridge pup yeah? I will look into that. Mine may be looking very similar to yours when i'm done... hope you don't mind!

Yes, the Dimarzio Ultra J is a great choice I found. It's just a tiny bit longer than the bridge rout so you need to extend it just a tad. This is always a hassle when dealing with routs where the bass is already finished and not covered with a pickguard. (You should have seen the beaver-rout someone did on a used one of these I found over at the local Music-go-round) So my choice to keep from disaster was to use my trusty dremel tool with a tiny sanding drum (not the half inch one, but smaller, like 1/4"). That nicely extended the ends of the cavity without chipping the finish or anything. You really need to remove very little wood to get it to fit.
And I'll add that in my opinion the Dimarzio tone is a great fit for the bass as well. It's hum free and surprisingly the poles on it perfectly match the string spacing as well! This bass just ends up superb!
As for looking like mine, the more Squier P/J 5ers the merrier! |

I use to have Seymour Duncan.Bassline 5er in mine, before converting to proper P-pickups (which I suggest And you should make a tortoise PG on it ). They fit without any work (except of soldering ). To see my babies

Will the standard Fender P5 pickguard fit? If not, is there a company that makes pickguards for the Squier 5 but with a P pup routing? Or did you do it yourself...
Thanks!

Thanks! | I suspect that the neck heel is wider on the Squier.
I made mine myself (with material from Guitar Fetish). If you have someone make one for you, you'll need to provide them with a template so they know where everything is.

My local tech who will be doing the build cuts his own for his guitars, i'm sure i can get him to make me one. Thanks for the Guitar Fetish tip! I'll check out their material!

Thanks! | Mine is self-made as well. Sorry and good luck. Oh, BTW, you certainly know: be careful with the openings for P-PU's do not use a 4 string as a template, as they are may be to tight together.
I used a standard 4 string PG on my 6 string modded (well the PG and bass in the process of further modding thanks to BillyB; but later more on that ).
As you can see the B and C strings (still where they are on a 5er) are quiet close to the the edges of the PU.
Further, just for information, the 5er has a bit other outer line. The electronic compartment is wider at the area where, on "normal" P-basses, the output jack is located, as it has to handle a large poti. And, off course, the area around the heel is different. Both leaves gaps using as 4er PG (marked red).
