Gun oil.
It's referring to the bore of a gun.
Keep in mind there are several different types of oils used in the maintenance of firearms, most are excellent products, and work wonderful for guitar applications as well.
I use (Hoppe's #9) and (CLP Break Free)
Both can be used or just one or the other.
I like the CLP for cleaning and lubricating, and the Hoppe's for finishing, protecting, and leaving a sheen that isn't greasy or thick.
Be aware that a lot of these oils have strong smells and some would say they aren't pleasant.
Personally, I love the smells. But some in your household may not.
Another really good gun product is Frog Lube, I've heard guys swear by this stuff, just haven't had the chance to try it out yet. |

It does well getting the clear and the color off, but that last layer is like concrete. Left in on for 3-4 hours last night, and there are still spots. A heating gun helped some spots, but there are some stubborn areas.
Going to have to break out the sand paper and elbow grease for the last of it.

My biggest concern is how sealed is that headstock? If its a matte finish that sharpie may have bled pretty deep into that woodand sanding may be futile since sharpies bleed deep like crazy. You may have to do a matching headstock deal there with the paint. I would truly start there first if thats a dealbreaker | Matching color headstock.

I've tried that stuff before, it smells nice, but does absolutely nothing to those finishes. If you're going to use chemical stripper on these, get the strong stuff. |

I sold her last year, and have regretted it since. :-( Squire P Bass gets a new lease on life

Got it primed and wet sanded today. Color goes on tomorrow. Will do nitro over the white and a vintage nitro tint on the neck. Right now I have the black pickguard, may get a tort in the future to stay true to form. I'll be doing the tug bar and pup/bridge covers too. Along these lines, but with a black pickguard (for now)...
Pics tomorrow. |
