Gun oil.

It's referring to the bore of a gun.

Keep in mind there are several different types of oils used in the maintenance of firearms, most are excellent products, and work wonderful for guitar applications as well.

I use (Hoppe's #9) and (CLP Break Free)
Both can be used or just one or the other.
I like the CLP for cleaning and lubricating, and the Hoppe's for finishing, protecting, and leaving a sheen that isn't greasy or thick.
Be aware that a lot of these oils have strong smells and some would say they aren't pleasant.
Personally, I love the smells. But some in your household may not.

Another really good gun product is Frog Lube, I've heard guys swear by this stuff, just haven't had the chance to try it out yet.

It's actually for the bores of wooden clarinets, basically just a purified mineral oil. Gunstock oil works well too, but that's more of an oil finish rather than just a conditioner. You can find it in the woodwind section of any music store, few bucks for a bottle will last forever.

Interesting, I didn't know a clarinet's "bore" was referred to this way.

Update...In the process of stripping body now. That last sealer coat it a bear to get off, hoping to have her stripped and sanded down by tomorrow night. I'll update with pics then.

What are you using to strip the finish? Im curious to know what remover works best on these thick plasticy finishes.

I'm using Kleen Strip from Home Depot. It does well getting the clear and the color off, but that last layer is like concrete. Left in on for 3-4 hours last night, and there are still spots. A heating gun helped some spots, but there are some stubborn areas.

Going to have to break out the sand paper and elbow grease for the last of it.

My biggest concern is how sealed is that headstock? If its a matte finish that sharpie may have bled pretty deep into that woodand sanding may be futile since sharpies bleed deep like crazy. You may have to do a matching headstock deal there with the paint. I would truly start there first if thats a dealbreaker
Matching color headstock.

Try that orange paint stripper. Don't recall the brand name.

Don't like the matching color headstock. I'm doing a vintage tint nitro on the headstock and neck. I'm also leaning towards olympic white/black pickguard instead of black. We'll see, have to look at some more.

If your talking about Citristrip, don't waste your time and money. I've tried that stuff before, it smells nice, but does absolutely nothing to those finishes. If you're going to use chemical stripper on these, get the strong stuff.

Ive never used Kleen Strip. I wonder if Aircraft Remover would be strong enough.

This was my Squier restoration. She was a 2000 Affinity too.
I sold her last year, and have regretted it since. :-(

Decided on a '62 clone in olympic white, rather than the black on black I had originally planned. Basically Entwistle's bass. Got it primed and wet sanded today. Color goes on tomorrow. Will do nitro over the white and a vintage nitro tint on the neck. Right now I have the black pickguard, may get a tort in the future to stay true to form. I'll be doing the tug bar and pup/bridge covers too. Along these lines, but with a black pickguard (for now)...

Pics tomorrow.

Thats a nice look. Cant go wrong with either black or tort. Or my favorite...white pickguard on a white bass. Look forward to see what you come up with.

Updates, sorry for the terrible pics. Only have one old camera working right now. Body was stripped (which I'll never do again), sanded and painted. It's now olympic white with nitro over top. Neck was sanded and sealed. Now has a coat of vintage amber tint nitro on it which I don't have pics of yet. Will update soon. I'll be wiring up new pots/pups this weekend.

Here's a couple better pics of the body and vintage tint on the neck (pre-sanding). Have sandpaper soaking now, hope to have them wet sanded and polished tonight...getting closer!

(and yes, that's a Fender decal, I've loved the look of Fender bass headstocks since I was a kid so I put one on there...commence flogging)
