Squier VM jag vs Squier VM jag special...

Stuck between these 2 for a backup bass....

The Vm jag looks better.. matching headstock and block inlay frets....

Buttttt

The VM Special has the active circuit... im not normally a fan, but i have played one of these, and that precision pickup sounds nice and fat boosted.... and was great out the box...

The Vm special is a bit cheaper... but price is not really an issue...

Which one would you go for and why...??

I like the Special more. But, I think that might be just because I'm a fanboy for active electronics. Oh well.

I'd go for the regular Jag. I like the idea of the stacked knob setup. Plus the block markers, too.

3TS (or crimson red) Vintage Modified Special

I'll never rest for this:
big blocks is great...
stacked knobs are great indeed...

Yet Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar and black Vintage Modifed Jaguar Special are agathis body... not that light and not that cuttin' in a band mix

Squier Vintage Modified Special in 3TS and/or crimson red are basswood body basses

They're (normally) lighter in weight and, even if "nosy" at the start, via the phatboost circuitry, get punchy and somewhat midscooped with the active tone at full

Believe me, I A/Bed them and then went for the second ones:
savin' money and gainin' tone

Cheers,
Wallace

Ooo interesting! Very weird how the black special is a different wood to the crimson ( which was the one i tested) sounded great!

If only they did the special with the block inlays! would be beautiful!

Dollar for Dollar the Special is the better value - in fact it's a steal at the price.
Buy the Special. If you decide later you'd prefer the regular Jag you won't lose much, as from my experience the Specials sell used for almost as much as they go new. The regular Jag takes a much greater depreciation hit used.
Also agree on the Red and Sunburst models of the Special being lighter. The Sunburst is a VERY attractive bass.

I have a red Squire VM Modified, which I replaced the Pick ups with EMG actives; the bridge with a Babicz Full Contact and the strings with D'Addario flat 40-100's. Plays and feels really good, the adjustability of the active controls makes a huge difference over the stock setup, but I don't think this is a fair comparison, too many mods to get it where I wanted it!

The red with block inlays might be very cool. It wouldn't look like anyone else's bass.
You could also find a pickguard color to your preference and buy the material to make it for 10 bucks. Make it your own personal bass.

Ill stick with the red one!

Maybe stain the neck black as well, be beautiful!

Its a shame they dont do the Special 34" with a matching headstock...

They do it with the Shortscale one but the body isnt basswood again!

go for the special. I tried both in the store, the black standard and the crimson special, and the active circuit was awesome enough to make me walk out with the special. A much better sounding bass IMO,I couldn't get as many cool tones out of the passive setup on the standard. the only area where the standard won was looks, and even then uit would have been better in a different color than the black that had been totally violated by grubby music store fingers.
