Squier's 1998 MIK fretless Jazz bass

With "no love" for this one
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/guy...r-help-966602/

I'll go like this...
http://www.bassline.it/catalogo.php?cat=Bassi&brand=103
there's a 98 (I checked its serial number out) MIK black Squier fretless Jazz I dig a lot

Can you please tell me which exact tonewoods were these basses made of?

Or can you provide any 1998 Fender/Squier catalogue detail to help me out?

many thanx in advance

Cheers,
Wallace

I believe these were made of plywood. That's the reason for the lack of love. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Some were, I have a plywood and a Alder. These basses can be great but do sometimes have more neck issues than I would like.

Personally, I avoid MIK Fenders. I haven't come across many, but the ones that I have were underwhelming. I stick to MIA, MIM, MIJ, MIC.

Wallace320 03-14-2013 08:57 AM

Wow: I really hope not

May my ears deceive me?

I'm sure no bass champ but, ownin' similar setup, I tried it out thru a Warwick Wa300 head and a Wca410 cab (so a somewhat "dry" combo, unable to color a bass to the point of makin' it sound a whole headroom dispenser)

How come it fooled me to the point of makin' me wantin' to grab it?!

Cheers,
Wallace

Fenders quality control varies. If it feels and sounds good, it is good.

RCCollins 03-14-2013 09:14 AM

Who knows? Maybe it's an alder one. That's always been my favorite wood for Fenders. Or maybe the sound of the pickups is more important than the body wood ;)

If it sounds and plays good, and the price is right, get it!

Wallace320 03-14-2013 09:18 AM

I hear you my friend

Yet I'm surprised, not talkin' Ampeg or Mesa amps/cab, a possibly plywood :spit: body could sound like that:confused:

I've not bought it (and probably never will)

I can't believe it

Anymore inputs?

Cheers,
Wallace

Agree. My alder MIK Squier II is a great bass not as good as my MIJ SQ squiers but a good bass I paid $65.00. I bought another Squier II ($100) the plywood one, compared to the alder Squier II it is not close. The Alder MIK is way better even in build. Even better is the 87' MIK E series Bullet I just bought ($100) It is really nice better than both of my other MIKs.

They (MIK) are all over the place v.s. say the first edition Squiers MIJ JV and SQ's which were all good.

Figjam 03-14-2013 09:33 AM

MIJ JV and SQ basses are amazing.

Wallace320 03-14-2013 10:16 AM

Well

Now I've to tell you that, still uncertain around tonewood, its secondhand price is

€. 490,00

I'm thinkin' it to be a bit high, isn't it?

Cheers,
Wallace

My (3) SQ's are as good or better than any MIA I have owned from any year. I got rid of my MIA P basses and the 3 Sq's P's are my main players. I still want a JV to complete the deal thou.

Not sure here in the U.S.A. I'm getting MIK P basses for $100 dollars U.S. and I would not pay anymore.

Well, the European market is different, but that's much too much.

Wallace320 03-14-2013 10:24 AM

I wouldn't touch it at that price. The Korean Squiers aren't bad instruments but they are made form a variety of woods (sometimes ply).

I had an okay-ish MIK Squier Telecaster (the guitar variety) and I got that for £50. It didn't even come close in quality to the current Indonesian and Chinese versions.
