It's a decent price for that bass whether it's his or not. Bet you could talk him down even more. Exactly the Alembic I want. Alas, no money. Go to the Alembic forum and ask there. You may have to join first to post there though.

There ought to be enough pics of this bass on the web if it is his. Does he have any proof Stanley Clark once owned it? Nice bass, if it's your thing.

If it's a '78 how could it have "started it all for Stanley Clarke! Literally!"? 'Seems to me that he was around before that.

Hmm... that same bass (or at least, the same picture) is here...

feeler: 1978 alembic series 1 short scale, flamed walnut caps

It stuck out because of the dark wood knots on either side of the bass. I know neither of the sellers BTW (maybe they're the same person).

Anyway, FYI.

I suppose it's possible that Stanley Clarke owned the bass at one time but hard to say. In my opinion, this possibility is somewhat irrelavent. That being said, we're looking at a late '70's Series I bass and the asking price is definitely in the ball park. Before I bought it, I'd want to check it out to make sure it's in full functioning order. If so, you could make an offer near his asking price and get a pretty decent deal (and a killer bass to boot).

Didn't notice the non-original bridge at first. I would lower my offer to offset this fact.

Stanley has owned a lot of basses.
So the one Vic has does not mean there aren't others out there.
I have no opinion on whether this particular bass was ever Stanley's.

fair enough but the CL post is kind of misleading..I suppose the "thought to be" keeps it from being definitive anyways.

Even if it isn't Stanley's bass, I still think is really cool.

The bass is thought to be his actual bass that can be heard on the George Duke project.
Contact Rick Turner, he would know for sure.

I think Stanley's first Series 1 was a '73. Wait a second...isn't this the bass that went to Hong Kong or something and started that tiff in the classifieds?

I think that bass was sold and the seller simply forgot to close the listing.

I did, at one time, buy an Alembic from Alan Woody back in 1985. A Series One, it had a different top wood from the back. Seems like Pau Ferro top and black Walnut back and was a 35" scale.

I was taking lessons from Roy Voght at the time and he brought out his Alembic and we stood them on their ends and mine was an inch taller. It was an '80 model. I didn't keep it, too big, and heavy, had to carry that separate transformer and 9 pin DIN cable.

Basically, famous players do sell instruments from time to time.

Stanley sold a number of his basses and a member here Malthumb, I believe has at least one of them.

The bass in the OP was not Stanley's bass, but was one that was offered for sale here on TB in the classifieds. It stands out because of the modified bridge and the photos identical to the bass offered for sale in the TB classifieds.
