I have the passive version. Just BXP. $159 used but in perfect condition. Excellent bass for the $$$.

I would think the first order of business would be to see if she prefers short or long scale. If it's short, then here's one more vote for the SS Jag. Otherwise, there are a ton of choices out there.

I happen to own an Ibanez SR-300, and recommend it very highly. The neck is one of the slimmest in the industry, yet still solid and stable-- great for smaller hands, even with the full (34") scale. The body is among the most comfortable I've ever held, and the electronics are pretty user-friendly, with controls in intuitive positions.

In short, it has it all-- decent sound, top-notch playability, and unmatched ergonomics.

A brand-spanking-new one will go for about $350, but there are used ones all over the internet-- the model has been out for years, and its sales have been quite prolific.

Best of luck!

Hofner Club Icon. Short scale, light and sounds pretty good.

Thanks for all the suggestions! He's probably going with either a Yamaha, Ibanez or a Squier.
