Static from pickguard screw?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just noticed this - when I touch the pickguard screw closest to the pickup, (right above the E string) I can hear a static-y sound through the cab. Its not loud, but definitely noticeable, and gets louder with higher volume (you know what I mean). Noticed this with my J ('62 reissue) and checked on my Memphis (don't laugh), and sure enough, same thing. Especially noticeable with the tone knob at 100%.
Is this normal?

Yup. I've complained about this before as well, but have never found it to really be too big of a problem. It might be for you if that's where you keep your thumb, though. I noticed mine when dragging my knuckles a bit when slapping. However, it wasn't very loud. My solution was... don't drag my knuckles! I talked to a repair guy who suggested coating the bottom of the PG with some sort of "rubber" paint to minimize static. If it is really annoying on your bass, ask around about that. I never did it so I can't speak to the validity of that solution. Good luck.

I should clarify that it was under my pickguard, not a specific screw.

Weird, I've never heard of this or had this happen. Maybe you need to add some shielding under your pickguard?

I'm thinking of just taking the screw out...
