???? For Steinberger users

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey ya'll-Im travelling (flying) up to NYC for a weekend's worth of gigs and have decided to bring my downsized little Steinberger headless copy instead of my big old Lakland and Fenders. I don't want to check my bass as luggage and don't want to lug a big full size hardcase or flightcase through cab rides and the subway (we won't have wheels up there). What is the best solution for the SMALLEST and most compact case possible? Different instrument cases? Sports or athletic bags? I need a soft case that can be stowed in the overhead compartment so it needs to be small, form fitting and compact as well as easily carried. i'm assuming there are some none-bass cases that could be used. Its a 34" scale bass but has the traditional Steinberger bridge and body. Please inform me oh wise ones! Cheers!

A few people use gun cases. They come in a variety of shapes/sizes/price ranges to suit your bass and personal preferences. Might attract some funny looks on the subway though.

i think a typical gun bag is a bad idea in the airport; all it takes is nervous sky marshal and you get two to the head. Try to get something as "musical" looking as possible.

My Steinberger case has gotten me stopped by police a few times.

"is that a gun?"
"No sir, I'm just the bass player"
"Please open the case."
"Sure..."
Spend next 20 minutes showing officer how cool the Steinberger is.

I once owned a cheap Steinberger copy from Musicyo.com and it came with a little gig bag. They're out there somewhere . . .

A gun case will get you hassled throughout the airport, but if you HAVE to go that route put guitar stickers all over that sucker.

I didn't have much luck with gun cases - maybe I didn't look at the right ones.

You might try a guitar gig bag, but make sure you can size it up before purchasing. (Some are long enough - some aren't.)

They still make gig bags for Steinys. Check MF.

Otherwise, a pool cue bag will work too.

Try a golf bag. Helluva lot easier to explain than a gun case.

I travel by air with my Steinberger L2 3 times a year, it's never a big hassle. They will definitley give it a closer look at security, but there is no reason to expect a major hassle. I replaced my original soft case with another from Musicyo, it is basicaly the same and a real steinberger has no issues in the overhead of a plane. Mine has never been damaged despite being crammed in one of those overheads, it's just a really solid bass.

thanks alot guys-I'll check out the sporting goods stores tomorrow. Practically this bass should work the best but it's definitely gonna look funny on my 6'1"-220lb frame. Maybe I'll just look really hip and cutting edge in NYC! Ha!

Walking around NYC or the air port with a gun case is NOT a good idea...
