Steinberger XT-2 Neck v. Fender Jazz Neck

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all!

Primarily for weight issues, I am seriously considering a Steinberger XT-2 but as it's almost an impossibility to try one before I buy one, I'm asking those of you here who may know from experience the answer to my question because you happened to own/play both at one point.

How does the XT-2's neck compare against the J? Is it considerably thicker? Faster? More cumbersome? Etc..

Dimensions as per spec sheets are close enough with the exception of the fingerboard radius, 9" on the J, 14" on the XT-2.

The help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have both an XT-2 as well as a MIM Fender Jazz. The nut width on the XT-2 is the same 1 1/2", and overall, the the neck feels similarly 'fast.' It's not chunky at all.

What is different about XT-2 neck is that the back is painted (black or white, depending on the body color), so it feels different from the finish on the Jazz neck. It can feel a little 'stickier' if your hands are moist.

What is a bigger issue on the XT-2 is the balance. Without the upper horn, and with the strap button behind the heel, it hangs strangely compared to a more conventional bass. A strap extender can fix that---these are available commercially, or can be made using basic metal working tools.

Feel free to PM me if you'd like additional info or specific measurements.
