I think what they mean by side dots only is no dots on the fingerboard, only lines. It will be mine, oh yes, it wil be mine.

SUB RAY5

HI all, I just picked up a sub-ray5(blk/mpl) yesterday from GC.
I also own a 97 EBMMSR5 (bought new in 98 which I love). So far the only thing I don't like about it is: NOTHING!!! For me it is perfect, a beautiful sight, nice slim neck, light body(my sr5 is a tank),and eargasm tones. I've read through these post and haven't had any probs with my preamp being hot. My controls are v/t/b if that helps. For me getting up in age(53)with back probs this sub ray5 is a back saver as my sr5 by the mid of the last set my shoulder and back starts to ache a little, you know when you find yourself leaning against something to ease the pain(lol). Well, there is a difference in the tones of my SR5 and my subray5 but only a truly experienced bass player can notice.
You can get pretty daggone close to that original MM tone if you can use your amps eq. As for me I'm as happy as a witch in a broom factory. 46lbs and I'm ready to work and that includes (bass, amp, cab, stand and mic) shucks my hartke
4.5xl weighs well you know. So far I'm very very GOOD. Thank you Sterling Ball for creating this series, you just set the bar so high other companies will have to follow suit or let
MM eat their share of the pie!!!

Thinking if I ever decide to get a fiver, it might be one of these.

I played drums in two bands and both of the bass players had real Stingray 5s and they were pretty sweet. I'm typically a Fender guy myself, but I haven't been big on Fender's fives for whatever reason.

Obviously this is the poor man's MM bass, but if it is anything close in tone, then it might be a good one.

I walked into a local music store to swap out some bad cables and walked out with a walnut 5 string sub. I had no intention of buying anything and have never even heard about these basses and dont even play 5 string basses. This bass played and sounded great. At the price I just could not leave without it.

I thought to myself "your not really going to buy a $300 bass"? Maybe I should go home and check talkbass first so I can hear how cheap and ****** they are. Bottom line is, I sat there for about an hour playing it and could not talk myself out of buying it. The ears don't lie, and this bass sounded and felt great.

Got it home and plugged into my Iamp 200 combo. Sounded harsh. The preamp is hot. Plugged it into the -15db input and.....presto, sounded great. This bass has great output and with the pad it's just right. I have not cranked my amp up yet but at bedroom levels it is full and phat. The preamp is very usable, I cranked the bass and tremble to full and still got good tone. A slight boost of both seems about right for me. It is very musical, every note sounds good and full, even on the g string.

Mine does not seem to have the volume problem some have reported. The volume is very smooth and usable from low to full output. The pots all work very smooth. The set up was pretty good except for the intonation. I honestly thought they had made a mistake in pricing the bass. I knew they had made some budget MM's but thought those were in the $500 to $700 range.

Bottom line is I can't put mine down. Check with me in a couple weeks after the honeymoon is over and see if I'm singing a different tune.

Brian (SBMM),

Just to clarify, is the pickup on the S.U.B. Ray4 wired in parallel?

Also, is the body wood on the S.U.B. SB4 the same species as the S.U.B. Ray4?

Thanks,
Bryan

I haven't seen an answer to this question about pickguards and I am curious as well. Bumping it up for SBMM.

Anyone can recommend a good bass bridge for my Ray4?

I've seen some on eBay but they look the same as the one installed in my sub. I was looking for the one with bigger allen screw head (?) like those in OLPs and Musicman.

TIA!

Honeyburst Ray4 basses are exclusive to our Independent Dealers
Any change we, in Europe, ever will see the Ray4 Honeyburst version?

I bought a Black SubRay 4 string and after some (well known in the meantime) distortion issues and lowering the pickup, am very happy.

Greetings from Holland

On the EQ knobs of my Ray4, there's a point about halfway through where it hitches. Is that the line between cut and boost?

Yes, center dentents indicates the position 0 where there is no boost or cut.
Mine came with the bass potentiometer broken. Pin 1 of potentiometer was lifted from the board. The track was cut so I had to solder a jumper wire.

I played three days without bass! only with the treble control, I thought the bass lacked absolutely bass, until I discovered the problem.

On the other hand my bass (RAY5) did not have the bridge grounded. It;s have the routing, but no the wire!

A very bad quality control. I have the inspection card just here! But lived in Argentina I would like to talk to the person who reviewed the electronics.

Sorry for my bad english.

Has anyone replaced the pre-amp in their SUB Ray 4 yet? if so what pre did you use and how difficult was it to install?
