Thinking about getting one of these, but I keep hearing about the hot pre-amp.

I've never owned an active bass or even played one, so I don't know jack about pre-amps.

I don't gig nowadays, just play in the house through small amps. Should I care about the pre-amp clipping that some have reported, or is it not a big deal considering I won't be playing at Madison Square Garden any time soon?

Don't worry, just turn the amps gain down a bit.

I own this bass and it's definitely a loud bass. But it has a master volume knob you can just turn down Make sure you aren't boosting the bass too much past 12 o'clock as that will cause clipping too.

Yes. It is hot. I use less than 10% of the volume(barely turn the knob from off position). I cannot even play it at full volume. I am afraid it will tear up my ear drum.
Overall, you will love it. Best bass I ever had. Look for an amp that has switch for active/passive input. You will be just fine.

Clipping isn't the problem, it's just really, really loud. It used to make my dishes rattle.

Sold it. But it's one of a very few basses that I've sold that I'd buy again.
