Sting (police) basses...what is this 8-string bass?

I just watched The Police video for the song "De do do do de da da da" after not having seen it for years; can anyone tell me what kind of bass Sting is playing? It looks like a red Gibson style body with a maple fretless neck 8 string. Its been bugging me for awhile and I can't tell what name is on the headstock. Is it a custom Hamer maybe??? Please help me answer a decades old question...
