Stingray 4H vs. 4HH ??

Sign in to disble this ad
I had a 96' Stingray 5H. Junk. Sounded like garbage, neck was useless, bowed like no tomorrow and the truss rod was useless.
Had a 2006 or so burnt trans orange EBMM Sterling. So beautiful omg....so gorgeous. Also, so bleh..... in the tone department. Just stale.
So against my better judgement I just aquired a gorgeous black w/tort guard, rosewood board 02' Ray 4H. Now.....finally....I see what all the hype is about. This thing sounds great. I love the Ray neck. Something I remember disliking years ago when checking them out. The string spacing feels wider than i normally like but maybe its because i'm used to resting my thumb on and playing over a neck pup.

Well, I have this bass in the classifieds FS/FT. I really wish I had the cash to keep it but as of now I dont. The ONE thing keeping me from saying not for sale and welcoming it into the permanent lineup is that it only has the one pup. While it sounds very good and all.......
Being black with a rosewood fretboard and having a nice neck and perfectly functioning truss rod the thought had crossed my mind to maybe see if it would be worth making this thing a 4HH??

What can you guys with HH rays tell me about the tonal differences? Theres got to be so much girth and punch with that extra H in there. plus i have to imagine that the neck pup solo'd would sound pretty badass too. no?

I have a local guy who is a luthier wizard that could easily do the job for me. Probably cost me $100-125 to get it routed, wired, ect. Plus with just buying a ray HH pick guard the placement isnt pick and choose like adding a J pup to a P bass. Its right there. Trace and route.
So for probably for $250 all said and done for the new PG, a pickup, routing, wiring, installing a 3 way switch(dont care about 5 or 7 way)....would you guys do it? Is it tonally worth it?
I was also thinking of getting a brass nut installed too but thats a whole different thing.

I play a stingray5 HH and it has a 5 way switch. I really like the double humbucker setup because it gives you a lot of versatility with your tone. although i don't use the full on neck pickup much, when mixed with the bridge pickup it sound great for jazz and funk. i'd go for doing the conversion it'll be worth it and you'll love the options it gives you.

Is the pole spacing the same on both bridge and neck pups? or is there an actually EBMM "neck" pup?

I would likely try and get a stock EBMM pup. Are there any years to get or avoid? It would be used for classic hard rock and metal. Not nu metal crap....actual metal with old school influences. Where bass tone can actually be heard.
