Last fall I interviewed Mr. Eddie Randall Jr, a bassist and son of a famous local bandleader, the man who gave Miles Davis hid first gig. Mr. Randall told me his main bass was a Pre-Ernie Ball Stingray, and that he could get an acoustic bass sound out it. I heard him do it at a luncheon yoday'

Dr, C,
Did he use any particularly unusual technique, equipment, or EQ for this?
Did his bass have an additional piezo pup?
While I don't have a fretless Ray, I would be interested if the tone got close to a DB.

I was really impressed! When I was in the line getting my plate, Mr. Randall took a solo and he came really close to the double bass sound. It helps that he has played bass since 1960 or so, he bought that Stingray new back in the Seventies. I didn't get a chance to talk to him since I am at my second of four engagements for today, but my guess is that he is using flatwounds and the mutes to get his sound.

semi off topic but I read in a review once that the Epiphone Thunderbird IV can closely approximate the double bass sound when the neck pickup is soloed. I have no idea if its true or not.
