Sorry. Ignore me, I'm losing the plot slowly but surely. | I used to feel that way as well...Until I found a different gig where my Rays appeared to sit in with better.
Its a 50/50 split with me between Js and Rays.
However I now have something new in the works that combines the 2.

Yup - I had a beautiful BFR SR5 HH roasted/ebony that I really wanted to love - unfortunately, it wasn't mid present enough for me... On the bright side, I traded it for a mint Sterling 5 HS and cash - and that's worked out very well for me... Sure, the Sterling isn't quite as pretty, but it has a better sound for me, and more useful positions from the 5 way switch - besides being atleast a pound lighter, and a seemingly thinner neck... I've come to realize that the Sterling's ceramic pups work better for me than the alnico pups of the SR5...

I'm not sure if I want to keep it or not, and would like a good reason to hold on to it before I decide to sell it and think about getting a P bass. | IMO/IME, the necks on a Stingray and Fender P have a very similar feel - it sounds to me like you might prefer a Sterling or a Jazz, since they both have smaller necks...

If you want a Fender tone, then get a Fender. The Sterling 5 will always be my go to bass. I think maybe the OP needs to get the bass properly set up with fresh strings, and play it in a band setting before giving up on it. The MM really shines in a live setting.
