Stingray fingerstyle tone good for heavier styles?

Sign in to disble this ad
I absolutely love the natural tone of Stingrays especially played fingerstyle but I can't ever recall seeing a Stingray in action where it was played fingerstyle in heavier music. It seems whenever I see a Stingray in heavier bands, they tend to always use a pick. It sounds great, don't get me wrong, but I'd love to know if playing a Ray fingerstyle would work in the context of heavier music such as metal and (modern) alternative/progressive rock or will it simply get drowned out in the mix?

If anyone can link me to some artists or videos that relate to my search I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers.

In my experience, the fact is that most people in heavier style use a pick. If you can cut trough a mix with a stingray, you won't be able with any other bass. That's the reason I sold mine, I couldn't get used to be heard that much .

I currently play in a cover band that plays rock from the heavier end of the spectrum (AC/Dc, G&R, Maiden etc).

I've played fingerstyle almost excludively for years (used to lose picks and never had one to hand, so played fingerstyle - I can't use a pick with any dexterity nowadays).

I don't own a Stingray, but played one the other day and can't imagine why it wouldn't be fine to play fingerstyle in almost any context.

Don't go by what you see other guys doing, try it and see if it works.

Good to know a Ray can cut through all the noise. There's something about a Ray's almost percussive growl which I think complements heavier styles beautifully so I don't mind being heard in the slightest as long as its not too overpowering.
The thing is, I love the fluidity of fingerstyle playing over the aggressiveness of a pick. Fingerstyle in heavier music isn't anything outlandish anyway so I know it works...just not sure if it works with a Stingray, is all.

Is Rage Against the Machine heavy enough for ya?
The guy in COC also used to use a Ray way back when.

I'm only a finger player and have no problem cuttin' through with my beloved Rays.

Though i wouldn't call them 'Heavy'; Karl Alvarez, from The Descendents, has one of the nicest finger-style Ray tones out there.

Just because you can't see someone doing it doesn't mean that it will not work.

A Stingray is a fine bass and even though it does have a very specific and signature voice with proper technique it can be used in just about any setting.

About a year ago, I watched a concert that Dave Mustane put together with a bunch of metal bands. (Forgot the name of the show/festival) I was suprised to see the majority of the bands had stingrays, forgot how many were finger style-using pick. I would say the ray is awesome for metal. If you are interested, I have a clip of a stingray fingerstyle in a reggae/rock type song I did for a friend. haha

Robert Trujillo has been hitting a Ray 5 every now and then mostly with infectious grooves and it sounds pretty neat. That's what he used on the Metallica auditions as well(and even got a compliment for his tone).

Phoenix from Linking park as well. He alternates between pick and fingerstyle but still...

Johnny Christ did most of the self-titled Avenged Sevenfold album on stingray playing fingerstyle. And he got a mean, mean tone. Listen to the live version of Afterlife, and you will see what I mean.

Rex from Pantera has also played a ray. Not sure what he played on that though.

One of my favourite stingray fingerstyle players is Matt Wong formely of RBF. Seriously his tone on ''Our live album is better than your live album'' is great and also a lot dirtier than what I would expect for a ska band. By the way the title of the record is so goddamn true...

The former bassist from the faceless used a stingray fingerstyle if i recall correctly. He was a great player and had awesome tone. The faceless is an progressive deathmetal/deathcore band, so if the guy cut through that mix, you'll be fine xd.
