I'd be willing to bet that nearly all of your favorite hi-fi recordings used some compression, but they don't "sound compressed". That's all I was getting at.
I can dig that but if a tone or recording doesn't overtly exhibit the defining qualities of a particular term, how can that term possibly be used to describe that tone or recording. If "it" is so subtle that you can't hear it, then "it" is an inadequte descriptor at best.

What I was suggesting was not "so subtle it can't be heard", but rather "fools the ear with psychoacoustics". But getting back to the specific topic, I've never done any A/B comparison of how necks sound, so my input was just meant as food for thought, not like I know whether the necks sound compressed.

I own a MM4 Stingray with a Status Graphite neck and a Bart MMC Dark. I LOVE it, lots of sustain and clarity

This might be of interest ... I am in no way affiliated with Capsule Music ... never even been there ... but if I had a couple of grand to spare, I'd be on my way.

I have one bass with a Graphite neck. It is a Modulus Graphite Q6 which sounds great for big venues, great plugged right into a big old-school tube amp, plays really well, and does not need to be set up for every dry or wet year here in the west. I also have basses with wood necks which I tend to play more often for small club dates and studio work.

The graphite neck will change the tone in a way you may like or maybe not. As we see above, it is very hard to use words to describe the difference. The Q6 is very even-playing without any dead spots, has lots of midrange which I like, responds well in the low register, has a low B that doesn't get ugly-sounding past the 7th fret. If you can get a graphite neck, then do! But keep your old neck around too if you ever want to use it again.

@jphovercraft: that's how my bass will look like after the surgery, but it's going to be fretted.

@wmheilma: thanks for input and suggestions.

Well well, I ordered one brand new and it's already in FedEx hands.
I love Rob Green's customer service, always been impeccable, before and after sales and even when you don't buy anything.

Dive, body weight depends

The Moses neck on my G&L SB-2 does not dive, and it is a heavier ash body I believe. Rays are not usually light bodies so probably no dive with a Moses. IMHO

I had an original Cutlas with a graphite neck. It just didn't work for me.

I will keep the original neck, just in case.

Mine had neck dive with the graphite neck, I had to put some Ultralights on to help.

How could a neck add compression, what? Also, why not a just get a Modulus Flea? He switched to them because Ray necks were warping in tour, and he seems to be doing fine now.

I'm not that good to answer the first question, re the second one, I just happen to have a black '98 Stingray with 2 bands that I really like, so I thought it would complement it nicely sonically and visually.

I have owned a stingray 5 fretless with Status Graphite neck - amazing sound but applications were so rare for me. Have also owned a jazz with Status graphite fretted - really regretted selling that. I currently have a Status Streamline 5. Graphite necks have a unique sound and feel which divides opinions but the Status necks are so lovely to play and use that the downsides are relatively insignificant for me.

Special ornament this year on my tree, I love expensive ornaments!

I really like the detail of the Status necks...

If you could chose... which one would you swap between the black '98 and the natural '78? And Why?

If it was me - neither - I would buy a cheap but good quality copy made of a soft wood such as alder or basswood, and fit it with good quality electronics e.g. Seymour Duncan.
