Stingray not doing it for me anymore?

Sign in to disble this ad
My '94 Stingray...the first bass I ever bought brand new...doesn't seem to do it for me anymore. I like how it feels, I like how it plays...but the tone just isn't there for me anymore.

I seemed to have graduated to 5-strings 99.9% of the time, and when I pick up the SR4...I feel kind of blah

Why do my under-$500 dean bases make me play so much better, like I'm excited to play them because they sound so good?

I'm tempted to put it up in the classifieds, but I'm torn being that it does hold a bit of sentimental value to me since I've had it for 14 years and the fact that I've tried new SR's, and they just don't feel the same. Maybe it's because this one is broken in.

I'm so FONCUSED!!!

Don't sell it, you will regret it. That being said, my favorite bass to play is an old Peavey Foundation. I have basses that cost 15x what I paid for it... But I like it. Let your hands and ears be the judge. If you like a Dean, rock it out.
It's tough though. Sometimes I feel guilty for not playing basses that other people say are awesome, but the longer I play and the older I get, the less I worry about that stuff. Keep the MM and play the others, you come back around and appreciate your old bass again.

Keep it. Basses fall in and out of favor over time. Tons of players go on 5 string kicks for years at a time only to eventually rediscover the joy and simplicity of 4 strings and vice versa. If you let it go, you will never have one just like it ever again. Every collection deserves a Stingray.

Do you need cash? I wouldn't sell a bass just because I didn't use it. Put it away and forget about it. Some years down the road it will be a real treat to bring her out again. Kindle up some good old memories with that 16 or 17 year old.

I have a warwick that I hate, cause of the neck dive but it is my only 4 strings.
and i like the tone so i'll never sell it.

you sure you had it for 14 years? I'm not so good at algebra but I believe 16 years have passed since '94.

anyway, unless you need the money don't sell it. early to mid ninties Rays have insane build quality.
my Rays also see less action than before, I got an AVS '62 Jazz which is the first Fender Jazz I actually liked so I'm obviously playing that bass much more now but I'm sure my Stingrays will have a comeback as I tend to rotate my basses and each has it's high and low seasons.

I hear its possible, what with technology these days, to purchase a bass after the year it was made in

lol...I don't remember if I bought it in '94 or '95 or what...but I did buy it new from Sam Ash in Queens, NY. I also had EB run the Serial number, and that was the store it was shipped to.

Like the others have said. Put it in it's case and put it in the closet or under the bed. You will be glad you did in the future.

Keep it. If it has sentimental value, you will regret selling it. Even if it just sits on a stand, or in the closet in a case-keep it. You might start craving that sound after taking a break from it.

I'll be the standout. Sell it. You don't like it anymore. You bought it becasue you liked the RHCP funky groves of the mid-90s and now you've grown up and moved on. Your playing style has changed. It is a fine bass and will probably make a new player very happy. Sell it.

I sold all of my classic collectable 4 string basses. I now own a bunch of nice 5 string basses. And if I had it to do all over again I would still sell off all of the 4 string basses.

What he said. If I don't play it, I sell it. At a later date you can always get another SR - it isn't like they are that rare. Use the funds to buy a 5-er that speaks to you or upgrade other parts of the gear change.

I tend to fall in and out of love with basses. Don't play it for a while and then pick it up again. Or give it a good clean, polish the frets, put on some new strings etc.

I've owned two Stingrays and had problems with dead spots on both. I only owned them for a short time and don't think I will ever buy one again.
