Stingray - The perfect gigging bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just got a MM stingray and have been playing it on all my gigs. Man, is this bass present and punchy and so supportive sonically! I think it may be the best over all live bass i've used over the years - just in terms of being able to be heard! I've spent years on Jazz basses or similar style basses, the Stingray seems more powerful and present - perfect for live, bar, club applications.

Similar story with Rays for me. I haven't gigged mine as of yet, but I hope its the ultimate because it's pretty much all I have now.

Playing about 30 different basses on hundreds of gigs in the last five years I have to say I agree. My Stingray HH is not my favorite bass, but it gets most of my live work. It seems to have just the right amount of everything for any situation.

I just paid a deposit on a new SR 5 HS to be my main 5-string. I can't wait to get my mojo all over it!

Er...wait...

I once had a Sterling 4 H. I liked it, but I always felt it lacked what a neck pickup provides. MM started offering dual-pickup models soon after. I am really looking forward to rocking my SR 5 HS.

Hard to beat the punchyness of a Stingray. Arguably the best for live gigs.

yeah, that's why i built a feathweight swamp ash body for mine. they sound great live and can punch their way thru any mix with authority, but it's weight was killing me, so i'm really looking forward to the 'maiden gig' with my now 8lb ray tomorrow night.

My SR5 only gets used for a couple songs a night. I used to use it for everything. Now, I have an on off relationship with it. I'm partial to my Jazz Basses. They just feel like home, to me.

Amen to that! Of all the Musicman's I have owned over that past years my new BFR SR5 HH has to be the best sounding and most verisitle. Here is a pic of my new beauty.

That's exactly why I sold both the Rays I had...although they have some design issues IMO, they sound great...not enough to endure the ridiculous weight however.

When is Musicman going to get hip to this and make a bass that is consistently lightweight?

Because Sterlings are advertised as the "smaller, lighter" alternative but it ain't necessarily so. Some are 9 pounds or slightly less, but I've seen plenty that were 10+ pounds. That is NOT a lightweight bass.

For me Stingrays COULD be the perfect gigging bass, but not if I'm in pain after 4 hours of wearing it.

This is an old debate and some guys don't care, but there are plenty of us who buy LOTS of basses and we DO

I bought a 2001 Stingray locally, cleaned it up, put a clear-coat of satin poly on the neck to smooth it out (also, had to re-seal the fretboard), and replaced all of the hardware with Stealth hardware and Hipshot Ultralites. I put new steel strings on it and played it out once. A month later, I put new nickels on it, and played it out once. I then sold it here on TB for $700. I hated it.

I had a Ray and am a big fan of EBMM. They're products are top notch and their B strings are as good as it gets on a 34 inch scale instrument. A passive J just does it for me. Here lately, I'm really appreciated a P bass as well.

When I only had one bass for 22 years, it was a Stingray circa 1980. When I sold it, I found that I had to buy more than one bass to cover the same sonic ground. I missed my Stingray and bought a new one in 2004 but it just didn't do it for me like my '80. It was not as warm but, rather, too edgy for me. I now suspect that it was the 3 Band EQ on the new one. My '80 had 2 Band EQ and it was much smoother on top. So, I sold the 2004 but I may look into the Classic series. I still miss a Stingray. Meanwhile, I play P and J basses..

Another reason i think the Stingray might be the perfect gigging bass is - IT'S BUILT LIKE A TANK!!!! Never dropped mine, but i think it could probably tumble down a flight of stairs and still do the gig.
