Stingray Pickup Placement...(I know.... search...)

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm researching a project, and I'd appriciate a bit of help here.

I've searched, and searched hard, but I've come up with at least 4 different measurements, for the Stingray sweetspot.

The three most common are between 89% and 90% of the scale length, from the players side of the nut, to the center of the pickup, the two most common being 89% and 90%.

It sounds like a small difference, but at bass scale length, its almost half an inch, pretty big difference IMHO(espcially when normalized to 35", which is at the moment, part of the plan), in pickup placement, like the 60's vs. 70's Jazz positions.

So, did EBMM, or pre EBMM's have a different position, maybe changing over the years?

Or could someone with a Stingray give me some accurate info?

Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any help.

PS: Mods, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place, I picked here over Pickups & Electronics, as the question is more about the layout of the bass, rather than the pickup itself.

You could easily find some high-res pics of a stingray and measure the proportion in pixels. A 2000px wide pic would allow you fine measurement.

You think that would be accurate enough?

I suppose I could check across a few pics to be certain.

If the sterling has the same placement. I'll measure and get back to you.

I'm pretty sure it has the same position, if you wouldn't mind.

Cheers guys!

From the nut to the middle of the pickup would be fantastic, or from the 12th fret, if its easier.

Of course mine is a fretless so from the nut would be easier for an exact measurement.

jus measure mine, and it's 29 1/2" from the front of the nut to the front of the pickup. you should be able to calculate the difference from a 34" scale to a 35" scale to get the placement on yours.
(the pickup is 1 7/8" wide so it would be an additional 9/16" to the center of the pickup.

For my own needs, can you do from the top of the pup to the neck heel? And can you measure the height & length of the truss rod wheel? Thanks.

It's 2 1/16 inches from the bridge according to musicman. Those people are fantastic!

Great picture!

I wonder if there's a more in depth set of photos that bring the other classic basses into it like P basses, hollowbodies, and Rickenbackers

Anybody seen something like that and have a link?

11" makes sense. That's the measurement of the curvature of the fretboard. Fender lists the fingerboard radius on an American Jazz Bass as 9.5 inches.

Yup, 11" is a pretty standard bass radius,
