Hey everyone, im new on this forum and ive been searching for an answer for awhile and cant find a good debate between these two basses. Im really stuck between a EBMM stingray 4 slo special HH stealth with a ebony fretboard and a Ibanez SR5000e prestige.
Ive been playing for years and my style is very diverse but im looking for a bass for metal-core. I play in drop B finger-style and I was playing a Ray35 which recently was stolen and im playing my friends stingray classic so im very familiar with the musicmans. I have never played a Ibanez Prestige, but ive played their lower end sr700 and was very, very impressed with it.
In case you want to know for tone reasons my rig is a Ampeg 8x10e with a svt classic head.
Any help would be appreciated and thank you in advance for any advice. |

Ive recently been starting a side project with my guitarist... we have a drummer sitting in who has always played in metalcore bands. at the last practice he stopped after a song and told me that he totally loved my tone BECAUSE EVERYONE uses Ibanezs in metal and unlike them Im the only bassist hes heard in our local area to have a tone that is thick, heavy and driving, but still articulate and he can hear me very clearly even when ive got the fuzz and distortion going...... we dont play metal core at all, but occassionally share a bill with a local M-C band.

A Sterling is a more aggressive sounding instrument compared to the Stingray, which I would think it to be more ideal for playing metal. You can't go wrong with the Stingray though, but I just think the Sterling is often forgotten.

I know this is probably is another forum but what are the pros and cons of stingray vs sterling? But mostly, how does the neck of a stealth feel? I've played coated necks like a flame maple and they feel sticky and slow, does the stealth feel smooth of like a flamed maple with clear coat? |

| | Bass player for Christ! | | | | | Stingray hands down. Much better built bass, better re-sale value, company has better customer service, and the bass sound better and is way more versatile.

| | | Very amusing thread So you guys diss the Ibbys simply because they're popular in a certain music genre? Did it occured to you those basses are maybe used for a good reason, like let's say...because they do work very well for that type of music?
Do you also hate Fenders? 'Cause they sure pop up eveywhere...

the Classic Stingray (which you said you have on loan from a friend) is quite different from the standard Stingray H or HH in that it has a lacquered neck and the 2 band preamp.
if you like the Classic's tone be warned that you won't be able to cope that vibe from the HH Stingray.
btw, regarding the Sterling, it has the same neck as the SLO Stingrays. non-SLOs and Classics have a beefier neck with less taper toward the headstock (which I much prefer personally).

They have this nasally character to their highs and high mids that I can't get over. These recent Soundgears though (The Premiums and Prestiges)? Freakin' GREAT! Those, I dig. Full bodied, in your your face tone with good looks and a smooth feel to boot.
