Stingray w/ Black Block Inlays

Sign in to disble this ad
I love black block inlays on maple necks and have always wondered why you never see any Stingrays with 'em.

So just for kicks I got a set of those decals and installed them on my SLO Stingray.

No idea if I'll keep 'em on there or what, but I just had to see up close and personal what my 'Ray looked like with blocks:

I always wondered what it look like too. I'm a fan of blocks, but I gotta admit, and I'm a little shocked by it, I don't like it. Looks too busy to me.

I think that looks awesome. Very classy! I would keep them on for sure.

I think it looks great. I'm going to do this to one of my 'Rays with a rosewood board (MOP of course).

I like black/maple stingrays and I like blocks, but it's not really doing much for me. If you dig it, though, that's all that matters, and it will certainly be recognizable!

Yea, I'm not sure how long I'll keep 'em on there.
I just figured for $7 and something that is completely removable it was a no-brainer experiment. I'm also going to play it for a while just to see how durable they are in use.

I think I'm digging it, but honestly I'm surprised there's not more haters!

Oh, and for anyone considering doing this...
I ordered from creative-cuts on eBay because they had the all-black (not MOP) blocks.
I think the product is very good quality.

This set was designed for a Fender Jazz bass so I had just a couple minor issues installing on the SR. The 12th fret decal wasn't long enough to cover both dots. There was a longer decal on the set for 24th fret or something, so I used that one. You can see in the pic that the 12th fret decal is just a little longer than the others.

Also, the last decals from the last 2 frets were just a smidge narrower than the inlay dot so up close you can see a small bulge from the dot on either side of the decal. Real minor details but just thought I'd post it for anyone interested.

It looked kinda weird at first, but then I looked again and went .... cool, a Geddy Ray.
