Sub bass

What exactly is a sub bass ?

3234718 02-02-2013 03:27 PM

It's a bass that's under.

bongomania 02-02-2013 03:29 PM

It's not a thing, usually. Sub bass usually describes a frequency range below the signal normally put out by a bass guitar--so under 30 or 40 Hz, roughly. Usually frequencies that low are generated by a synth or other electronic processing.

Is this what you are asking about?

typically I tell people its 25 hz and under, right at the limits of human hearing. when sound becomes feel, and at extreme levels, pain.

What sounds like a bass synth or a 808 kick in some parts of the music is me playing a fretless sub contra bass.

So what would be the tuning of a sub bass, would it be an octave lower ?

Not necessarily, it could be bass lower than the standard B string frequency which is about 31Hz,

Legault 02-03-2013 08:16 PM

I'd like to tune my bass down to f# but I guess I need proper speakers for that low of frequencies.

Not necessarily. What kind of cab(s) and head are you using? And how many watts is your amp?

Legault 02-03-2013 08:56 PM

Currently don't have cabs :( unsure about what I want to buy, I got a yorkville 100watt

Legault 02-03-2013 08:59 PM

I have a gt 10b boss bass processor, and a maxetone 7 string

Legault 02-03-2013 09:02 PM

I've been looking into getting a 9 - 12 string just have that lower end tunings, (F#)

JAUQO III-X 02-03-2013 09:08 PM

Please have no worries about the low F# string, it's easier to get a great sounding F# than you believe.

As far as your amp head goes you will need a minimum 500 watts, that will give you enough headroom and come in handy at low volumes.

Have you looked into any specific brand cabs?

Legault 02-03-2013 09:51 PM

Not at all, also not sure if I should enter the rack world.

bongomania 02-03-2013 10:05 PM

You definitely need some serious speakers in order to hear sub-bass frequencies, and for that matter you can even destroy inadequate speakers that way.

The good news is if you just want to learn and practice some tunes written for down-tuned bass, you can do that with any amp. You'll just hear the upper harmonics of the lower notes, not the "meat" of them.

If your intention is to actually hear all that low content, you'll need to spend real money on a real (and big) speaker cab.

SUB basses are made by Sterling By Music Man

They're an "entry level" Music Man style bass with a LOT of potential!

Legault 02-03-2013 11:14 PM

Well I play a wide range of music, I play a lot of meshuggah, but I like the sound of yves carbonne and his basses
