SX Basses?

I'm a huge funk fan, I like Larry Graham, Bernard Edwards of Chic, Bootsy Collins, Wayman Tisdale, and so on so forth! I was considering buying an SX bass cause I do alot of slapping but was wondering what about a squier? I'm on a budget of $180 so im kinda leaning towards an SX, are those basses good for slap? Thanks for all help!

$180 huh? If you can save up another $100, you might like the Sterling by Music Man SUB series. Sorry I don't have a link, I'm on my iPhone...but they're kinda like Sterling/MM's answer to Squier basses, and you might find them a little punchier than a Squier P or J...definitely good for funk/slap.

About halfway down the page. $179.00
For slap it is the best you are going to do in that range.

They will be as good for it as any other Fender clones. Search the forums for "essex" (the search engine ignores two-letter words so they use essex instead of sx) and you'll find lots of threads on them.

Love mine.

Just got it last week. After a setup, it's great for slap (and cops a pretty convincing Jaco tone, too!!).

I have an SX ursa 6 string a threw a $12 2band EQ and it made my $169 bass sounds as good as any $500-700 bass i have owned(traben's and G&L's)i love the feel and no different sound or feel than my 2 Squier VM jazzes(4 and 5)

I have a 5-string SX Ursa Jazz, and it would sound great slapped if I was any good at slapping.

Like to slap? Considering an SX? You need to go to Yootoob and listen to 11coopbass. He has many demos of SX and other cheap basses and plays them beautifully. This is my favorite, but he's uploaded SXs, Squiers, also a cheap MM copy which also sounds great. Just put in the cheap, Chinese pre-amps like he does. Although scooping the eq on an MM gives a great slap tone, my Korean Jazz was the easiest bass for my rubbish thumb to make something half-decent out of.

Here's that link - be sure to check out a number of his:

Yea coops the man and i think im considering just buying an sx, seen alot of reviews of em on youtube and they sound pretty good, Im not looking to buy a $500 bass because i'm only 16! I mean im pretty advanced but don't see any point in buying that expensive of a bass, maybe in the future though!~ Thanks again!

Holy Mary - Been skunking around on these SX basses for a couple of days - and I'm pretty sure Coops video just pushed me over the edge. Time to order up!
