SX (Essex) Question: Ursa 2 vs Ursa 2 Humbucker?
Greetings All! Thanks for looking in and many more thanks for any future replies!
I've decided to throw down some bucks on an SX Ursa 2…partly to finally have an SX of my own, but also as a possible mod platform. I've got an SD Quarter Pounder Jazz neck pickup just itchin' for a home and I'm planning on putting on a maple neck/rosewood fretboard with pearloid blocks. Also, I may throw in some conductive paint, if needs be. I have some more artistic mods in mind down the road, but that's for another thread. ;)
Here's the two models I'm debating between;
My questions are pretty straightforward;
Would I be better off getting the Ursa 2 Humbucker instead? If not/if so, why? What kind of sound would I expect to hear from either?
Overall, I like a rather aggressive tone, rich in mid-range, but not at the expense of the lower range. I'll likely add some Ernie Ball Cobalts to push it more towards that, but I'm trying to take all possibilities into consideration. Weight is only a small factor, but I can't help but notice the humbucker model appears to be a bit lighter.
If anyone with firsthand experience with either or both of these models could chime it, it'd be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks for your time!

For what you want, I'd say HUM. See:

I have only the standard alder Ursa 2, although I was looking close at that CAR "regular" Ursa (more for the sale price and the ash body instead of alder - decided against it because I'm not a CAR guy), and I've been looking at the HUM model too. I would say that you can't really count on Kurt's stated weight to be accurate, any more than you can expect any two Fenders off the rack to weigh exactly the same. The alder Ursa I ended up with is at least a pound if not two pounds over the promised 8# in the Rondo copy. I don't see anything at all differentiating the two ash-bodied models you're considering that would make a pound's worth of difference on average.
Also, since you say you're gonna swap the neck out, it's my understanding (possibly incorrect - feel free to jump in and correct me) that Fender licensed necks do not quite fit the standard Ursa pocket without a bit of slight luthierie. I *do* know that "normal Jazz" pickguards don't fit :)
Wow, that was fast! :eek:
Keep 'em comin', y'all!
Ignoring the variables between two copies of the same model, what would I expect to hear "right out of the box"?
As far as the "neck" subject goes, I'm thinking of buying a separate Ursa 2, swapping the necks and putting what I don't use up for sale, either as separate pieces or as a whole if someone wants both. All the specs appear to be exactly the same. At worse, it'll need a little "massaging" to make a good fit.
Here's a little quick-and-dirty photo-shoppery I did to simulate what I'd be producing…at least, until I get even more artsy with it. ;)
Thanks again! :D
I was very encouraged when I saw this vid...
...until the very tail-end when he mentioned he'd installed a preamp. The fit & finish part is still relevant, but there's no telling how much the sound has been altered. I only wished he'd posted his vid before installation. :mad:
