I plan on painting the headstock black to match the body, but with about 1/2" of exposed wood around the edge like the tbirds.

As for flames, I have considered some but I want to be careful not let come take away from the look.

As for cutting through a mix, my band is a three piece so I dont want to cover the guitar, but fit right up under it. I have a russian Big Muff to boost my mids up for guitar solos. I have some strings on order from juststrings.com to switch the tuning over to a 5 string (minus the bottom string).

More To Come ....

Thumbs up

Thats a really pro looking job, i love it. I've been toying with the thought of modding an sx for a while now - you may have pushed me over the edge. How do you like the neck as compared to a fender jazz - did it need much work?

I normally dislike matching headstocks, especially on maple necks, but I really like the idea of doing a Thunderbird-esque headstock.

On my SX the bridge is a little to one side. The G string is close to the edge of the neck but the E string has lots of room. From the pics it looks like yours is possibly the opposite with the E string too close to the edge.

Maybe it's just the result of the photo.

Maybe it's a reason to replace the bridge and put it square?

Looks great. Really like the flat black / gloss black style. I have a 6 string octave-higher instrument with the flat/gloss black color scheme.

you are right the E is relatively close to the top while the g has got room. I might see is I can slide it over a bit to correct it.

Thanks for the comments guys its really turned in to a great project. Funny how it started out just as a back up bass to my thunderbird, now I dont play my tbird any more.

Hey guys,
Its been awhile since I have updated here. The bass is doing great! I've put some black vinyl on the headstock to look like the headstock above. Its not too bad. I'll take some pictures and do some clips here in just a bit. I was thinking of doing clips of it plugged in to my Tech21 Bass Driver with everything set pretty much flat. That sound ok with you guys for a nice fair sound clips?

Ok here are some updates for you.

Here's a clip that I recorded. Please excuse the messy playing I was goofing around. Recording Details: Jbird into Tech21 Bass Driver (all Settings at 12 oclock) -> Presonus Firebox -> Garageband. No additional plugins.

That is by far the hottest black bass I have ever seen. Nice work!

Sounds great too. It's tuned BEAD right?
