Good base for modifications but out the box they were not inspiring. On the other hand, for past 3 years I've been playing Squire that I bought with EMG pups and Gotoh bridge (for $150 on ebay) and did recently A/B test against MIA precision and results were quite shocking, hearing Squire outperforming sound wise MIA P. So I guess Squire all the way!!!! |

Yes I have done some major mods to both. But the total cost of bass plus mods is still less than a Squier and I have exactly the bass I want with USA electronics and better hardware!
If you are looking for a jazz bass IMO this is the best deal on the planet: http://www.rondomusic.com/ursa2alderna.html http://www.rondomusic.com/ursa2alder3ts.html
Better wood, better neck, better tuners and still only $140!
Here is mine with mods:

Not a perfect fit. I had to drill a few new screw holes but the neck pocket and pickup route fit with no adjustment. Can't beat the price either!

Are you using the stock pickups? From what I've read, they are also much better than the Squires. |

Squiers cost more than twice what a comparable SX costs however, so when you find a good SX it's that much cooler (for those who like bang for their buck).

Do you know how copper wire was invented?
It was two Scots fight-in over a penny... badaboom! |

I think (when did that start to happen ) that the Squier stuff
is trying to emulate "vintage", so their pickups are a little mellower or something .
BTW I have absolutely nothing to base this theory on, other than the SX pickups are ceramic.

I don't know why I'm so damned excited. I had a '63 Precision, a '64 Jazz and 2 German Hofner 500/1 basses.
I just miss that '64 and can't afford or justify a new one. |

The original pups sounded good but I found a great deal on a set of used GL pups so I went ahead and put those in. Currently my P/J still has the SX pickups and they sound very good to me. I do have a P/J set of Duncan Quarter Pounders that I'm going to put in just to give it a hotter, beefier tone. But I really don't mind the stock SX pups at all.

I think they sound incredible. My P has a Fender original '62 in it, but not because I disliked the stock pickup in any way.

It was a bit mellower that the stocker. I also did a second SX P with maple neck with the hotter Billy Sheehan Will Power P pickup.
Not because I had to, just because I could

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Dec 2008 Location: Benicia, CA. USA | | | My new SX Ursa 2 sunburst J-Bass arrived today. I installed new Dunlop 45-105 round wounds and adjusted the intonation and left for the blues jam at Redhouse Studios in Walnut Creek, CA. I was amazed, tone, sustain, finish, great looking wood in the neck and body. I'm completely amazed! This bass is an incredible value. I had a '64 Jazz from about '72 to '82 and really missed it. I can't justify or afford a Fender now so I read up on these and thought I'd try them out. Fantastic! Pics tomorrow. |
