my basses:

Fender Custom Classic Jazz Bass:
Best JB i've ever played. Had a AV RI 75er, very heavy, not resonant at all, but was beautiful bass. Sold it and made a superb deal with this Custom Classic JB. Will stay with me forever, my main gigging bass, Ash-Body, Maple, Nitrofinish that ages beautiful, very punchy, very musical eq. perfect for rock and everything else.

Fender Custom Shop 59er Precision:
have owned a stingray from 1991 in pristine condition (https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/1...09396493782385) but wasn't very resonant, very bad E string, was my third Stingray as I was searching for a good sounding one, but they never delivered what I was expecting. (timmy c from ratm had a big influence on me, so... ) So I sold it and purchased the precision as I took the chance to make a killer deal. Best decision i've ever done. this precision sounds huge, very comfortable to play, and i LOVE the black color with the golden pickguard. The stingray went to a guy who just started play bass after 35 years not playing at all - i think he got a good "starter" instrument for that...

Gibson Grabber 1979:
Found this in some classifieds here in Switzerland, very cheap, almost in new condition! Had it setup by a luthier, and now plays perfect, huge sound, especially with a pick trough my 400W all-tupe-amp (http://weber-amps.de/) still getting used to it due to its somehow unusual neck profile, but I just love to play some postrock-sound with it.

(Thread about it: gibson grabber 1979 "closet classic" - got it!)

Mine:

90s Music Man Stingray - Fun to play, but not always the tone I'm really looking for so it doesn't get played that often.

Warwick Fortress One 5-string (modded w/Barts) - this is my main, go-to bass. Plays and sounds like a dream. Just love this bass to death.

90s Warwick Corvette Std Fretless - Has an ebony fretboard and I struggle to keep the neck "just right". Requires frequent adjustments. Otherwise, a great bass.

Peavey GV - My #2 fiver (behind my Fortress). Plays like a dream and the graphite neck is great. Love the tones this thing can produce.

MTD active Kingston 5 (modded w/Barts) - Love the neck on this thing and it apes the Stingray tone, but without the clickiness. For some reason, I just don't play it that much. It's red with a black pick guard (that I made) and a maple neck, so it's a looker.

83 Fender Precision - My ol' faithful. Love it for old school P-Bass tones.

RobWave Electric Upright - my only EUB, so it gets played when needed.

Olympia ABG 4-string - neck needs repair, so it is collecting dust.

System Craft fretless 4-string (modded w/Barts) - the most temperamental neck I've ever played. Cannot keep it adjusted correctly for more than a few days. Great bass otherwise.

HEAVILY modded 80s ARIA Pro II CTB - Doesn't get much play. Has some grounding issues.

MIK Tune Bass Maniac 5-string - good bass, but not as good as the old Japanese version. Trying to sell it.

Squier Vintage jazz - LOVE this bass! It has become one of my main players. It's the sunburst, pick guard-less body from the fretless version with the blocked maple neck from the natural finish fretted version. The only mod I've made is the Babiscz bridge. Could not be happier with this bass.

I own over a dozen basses, so I'll keep it simple & just discuss my 2 favorites - my USA Spector NS-4 and my Rickenbacker 4004Cii.

The Spector is the definition of "modern" tone - deep tight lows, wide punchy mids and sparkling highs. A brutal and agressive bass when played hard, but also capable of great subtlety when gently coaxed. This is my main bass, and my 1st choice for use in my original metal band.

The Ric embodies the best aspects of "classic" bass tones - thumpy lows, warm midrange and smooth highs. It's tone is equal parts P-Bass, 4001 and Thunderbird. This is my bass of choice when playing with my bluegrass cover band, or just playing alone at home. I love the warm, organic sound and the dynamic responsiveness it has.

I like ALL of mine for different reasons. The Iceman is my least favorite due to heavy neckdive. The Gene Simmons Axe also dives but it is for looking good next to my Ace and Paul guitars on the wall. The Schecter has a hard corner that bothers my right forearm but has the best finish and sound. The Jacksons are my prizes. To me, they feel just right.

In the past few weeks, I have sold off 3 of my basses. Not because I disliked them but because I had a beauty of a bass coming in. All of my basses though I have bonded with and don't ever see myself selling the ones I currently have now. Here is what they are.

2010 Stingray Classic Breast Cancer Awareness Bass
This one is a very special bass to not only me but my entire family. Back in 2010, I wanted to switch things up from my Ibanez basses that I had been using for almost 2 decades. My senior pastor of the church I was on staff at had a Music Man Sub and I loved the sound so in April I traded my Taylor acoustic guitar for a mint condition Sterling 4 H and fell in love with it. About 2 weeks later, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Because I had just joined the EBMM forum and didn't know much about the company at the time, I asked if they would do a custom build and build me the breast cancer awareness bass. The forum members then let me know that they only do custom work for endorsed artists. I understood and was getting ready to buy another Music Man and then have custom work done to it when Sterling Ball read my post and said they would build the bass. My entire family was very humbled. He then said he would donate 100% of the funds from the bass to our Relay for Life team and challenged the forum members to do the same if they felt compelled. Bass Central then chimed in and said I could order the bass through them and they too would donate 100% of the funds they would make to our Relay for life team. That year alone, just from everyone's donations, we raised about $7,500.00. My wife is now a breast cancer survivor and is now a committee member for the Relay for Life. The bass is used for raising awareness and funds for cancer research. Now in addition to the bass looking amazing and it being used for a good cause, it sounds great too. Cuts through the mix like you would not believe. Even if the bass is not being used for some type of awareness gig or raising funds, it is simply a wonderful bass to play.

2009 Bongo 4HH Dargies Delight II
With this bass, it was my first Bongo and I bought it in faith off of Sterling Ball's recommendation. At first I criticized the Bongo because I thought it looked weird. Sterling told me to give it time and it would grow on me. Sure enough, he was right. The shape did start to grow on me. When I bought the bass, it was new and had a money back guarantee if I didn't like it. Well, not only did I like it, I loved it and Bongo's instantly became my main basses. I now have 4! I love this bass though.

2010 Bongo 4H D.O.B. Black Sugar BFR Roasted Neck
My number 1! Shortly after I got the Bongo 4 HH Dargies Delight II, the month long order window came out for the BFR Roasted Neck's. I instantly fell in love. I was also intrigued how a Bongo 4 H would differ from a Bongo 4 HH. Sterling Ball had said his favorite Music Man was the Bongo 4 H. I was intrigued by that so I ordered my next Bongo to be a 4 H to see how I would like it. I later on found out only 4 Bongo BFR Roasted Neck 4 H's were made. I then got it and fell in love. It has some similarities to the 4 HH but also some differences too but in a good way. The reason why this bass is my number 1 is because I love everything about it from the looks, to the sound, to the feel. Like a girl that you have an instant connection with, this bass and I have perfect chemistry together.

2012 Bongo 4Hp D.O.B. Candy Apple Red
This one is my number 2 but close to be number 1! You guys are going to laugh but when I retired my 2 Ibanez SR 500 Soundgears that were from the mid 90's. a 94' for the black one and a 95' for the candy apple red one, I wanted to duplicate that set up with my Music Man basses. As a result, to compliment my Bongo 4 H that is black sugar, I ordered this Bongo 4 Hp in candy apple red. With the abalone pick guard, holy cow this thing is a looker! With the added piezo, it is probably my most versatile bass to date. This thing is a tone monster! It plays so freaking good too. To date, this is probably my favorite set up on a Bongo, a 4 Hp configuration. It really is a toss up to which bass I like more between this one and my BFR Roasted Neck.

2013 Bongo 4HHp PDN Mahogany Honey Burst Roasted Neck
Okay, so with this one, I technically don't have it yet as it just got finished and as I type this is currently en route to Bass Central where they will then ship it to me. As a result, I probably will not get this bass until the end of next week. But that being said, I am yet to play a Bongo I have not bonded with. These really are my favorite basses made. When I bought the 4 Hp Bongo last year, I was intrigued by adding the piezo. I ordered the last one to be a single H to compliment by regular single H. Then the order window came for the PDN. I was so impressed with the piezo option on the single H Bongo that it started eating away at my curiosity about what a HHp Bongo would be like. The curiosity is still killing me too! As a result, this one was ordered when the order window opened up. Now here is the real kicker with this bass that makes it really special to me. Not only is it a limited model but my order got lost and it was not discovered until September, when the basses were being shipped. Fortunately for me, Music Man and Bass Central both have great customer service and they got the bass reordered. As a result, it is now the only 2013 PDN Honey Roasted Neck. It is also the only PDN Honey Roasted that was ordered as a Bongo 4 HHp so it truly is going to be a one of a kind. Needless to say, I am counting down the days now until this baby is home!

1994 Ibanez SR 500 Soundgear bass
My number 1 from 1994 to 2010. Still love this bass and it has a ton of sentimental value. Up until 2010, everything I have done in the Christian music industry was done with either this bass or the next one.

1995 Ibanez SR 500 Soundgear bass
My number 2 bass from 1995 to 2010. With what was said above, also applies to this bass too. Both of these basses have been all of the country with me from touring to moving. Have withstood the test of time and have always been reliable. In the almost 20 years of owning these basses, I have never had to do an adjustment or a set up. In fact, with my 95' I had to slightly adjust the truss rod for the first time about 3 years ago when it was a cold winter day that was below 0 and the kids left the back door open that cause the bass to get a cold draft on it but a quarter turn fixed the issue and she has been rock solid sense.

2010 Ibanez AEB 10 Acoustic bass Gonna sell this one soon. It is a good bass but I want a higher end acoustic. It has done well for me in the short time I have had it but we have not bonded. I have friend zoned this bass.

2010 Fender MIM Standard Jazz- I had just gotten back into bass playing after playing drums for a while. I didn't have the $1000 for the Duff McKagan bass, as I had the Jazz Special before, albeit with a Badass II Bridge, and I thought I remembered liking Jazz Basses before. So I bought it to have something decent to play. I replaced the bridge with a BadAss II this past July, and the setup was drastically altered for the better, although I went to a Babicz after a short tenure with a Gotoh 201. I'm not super happy with this one right now, although it plays really nice.

'09 Fender American Standard P- It's my go to. Strung with Rotosound 66LD in Eb- It's simply the best instrument I've ever had- bar none. This is the "one," as much as I've played other basses that were "nicer," I've never had a bass that sang to me and was absolutely perfect for me. I found it hanging on the wall in the spring of '11- And walked out after handing over $1000 in cash.

Heavily Modified Fender Aerodyne- I saw it for sale in Toronto, and I liked it. It had a really cool vibe. It rocks in standard.

Squier CV P- I bought it to have a P bass in December of '10. I sold it when I bought the American Standard the spring. I bought it again (same SN#) that to put flats on. It not longer wears flats, but it tuned a full step down. I've thought about the flats again, though.

Family portrait in September.

1982 Rickenbacker 4001 Mapleglo- First bass, bought it in '94 at a music store going out of business. Screwed around with it, threw it under the bed and kept playing the trumpet instead. Fast forward to 2011, band needs a bass player more than trumpet - time to learn the bass. Never looked back. Beautiful instrument, it turned 30 a couple months ago. Have fun playing it, but it's heavy and ergonomically not great for me. Put Chrome flats on it, which improved the tone.

2011 Fender American Standard P - Burst/tort/rosewood. Love this bass. Feels so nice to play. Dug through many others, maple, etc to find this one. Year old in the store, small chip in the finish. Felt best, so I had to have that one. Great tone through TH350+GB cabs. Love the simplicity of a P. Trying Sunbeams and starting to get used to them as they mellow.

Next? Maybe buy a FSR Jazz and play around with modding it. Although the Nord/Sad/Lull siren call is hard to ignore .

My one and only bass, a Yamaha RBX 170 named Jessica Nina. The more I play this bass the more I love it, the sounds I get are so awesome. Only problem is she is full of noise ._.

I have a Fender Jazz, I think it's an '01, anyway, I bought it in '09. It was in a music store and not second-hand, so I guess it must have been in a factory for a long time, or maybe the store for a few years. It's a beautiful bass, although I do, at times, regret having it defretted. It's a Sunburst with a rosewood FB and white PG, although I'm hoping to fit a tort one. It hasn't had any strings on for a while, sadly, but it's not as though I need it. It's more of a luxury bass for me. I'm hoping to get some tapewounds. Those new 'white' (clear) ones look nice.

In 2011 I bought a '76 Ibanez P bass...
http://www.ibanezwiki.com/download/a.../132568/26.jpg
... Just like the one on the left, although it has had the knobs changed and the ashtrays and tugbar are gone. Since getting it, I've reinstalled a tugbar and a bridge cover. I considered the pickup cover, too, but I thought it might be too 'in the way' for me. I've also swapped the neck for a fretted rosewood one. I love the neck that came on it, and it has a nice coating which shows little wear from years of roundwounds, but I didn't feel the need for 2 fretless basses. This is my main player. She wears a set of GHS flats, and there's a big chunk of foam under the bridge cover. It really is a joy to play. I would like to have the original neck on there, because it feels so 'broken in', but I'm getting there with the new one. The tech who installed the new neck shaved the heel, rather than the neck pocket, so I can swap them back if I feel the need. I've been playing her recently at blues jams, and thoroughly enjoying the experience.

It must be me: I'm in love with your country (I visited two years ago with my wife)

But I seem to closely link with all of you lusitans.

Anyway I'm divorcin' so stop sentimentalism now: back to bass

She sits almost perfectly in the mix, isn't it?

She's noisy down to kind of (even if cheap) high output P/J pickups

It was the same with my 20+ years Rbx350 (my first bass)
Alder body with one piece maple neck, 22 frets rosewood fingerboard and P/J configuration.

Just swap pickups out: it's a not so expensive touch
Very inexpensive come Tesla pickups, yet they tend
to be a bit noisy as well (I put EMGhz on mine) so, spendin' just a lil' more, I think a pair of Bartolinis can serve you fine

Cheers,
Wallace

I've sold off reduntant stuff and only kept the 3 basses I actually use:

Hi quality allparts J with handwound pups etc., passive fourstring: My Jazz with rounds. Offwhite, turtle pg, rosewood board.

Fender CIJ P57RI: My P with flats. Offwhite, fakebronze pg, maple board.

Sandberg JM5 Supreme: My active 5-string, with rounds. Offwhite, pearloid pg, rosewood board.

That's it, not much to say. They cover all my needs and sounds great, simple as that. Combined with Aguilar Tonehammer pre or Sansamp VT to FoH, and RH450 or LittleMark amps with 112's for stage monitoring, I travel light these days. Still GASing for a nice Sadowsky to replace the Sandberg though ;-)

Maybe if you change the trussrod cover to one that says Gibson you may feel better about it.

My favorites are my DIY EUB experiments.

I have two basses as of right now. I only use one of them though but I can't part with my other because it was my first bass.

2008 Fender American deluxe jazz bass V Amber Finish

I LOVE THIS BASS! After getting this I haven't had any GAS an that's exactly what I was hoping when I bought it. Very versatile instrument. I usually hide in my room playing this through a little fender rumble when I don't want to be disturbed. Amazing instrument.

2003 Ibanez GSR 200

Beginner instrument, but I love it. Can't part with it because of sentimental reasons. Now I play some Wooten songs or licks on it and I can't understand how I used to think that bass sounded good with that style of music. Then I pick up my JB and I'm happy again haha

Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass:
Strung with D'addario rounds and pickups replaced with Fender super 55's split coils. Otherwise stock. Was my main bass for a long time but has only recently been brought back to being gig worthy ( had a few issues). Haven't gigged her since the mod but the 55s sound pretty mighty!

Fender Jaguar Bass:
Stock. Strung with GHS boomers. I use this in a blues band but it is such a versatile bass.

G&L L5500 5 string:
Picked this up for a bargain. US made, EMG pickups, maple board strung with Rotosound trubass black nylons. I use this mainly in my original groove/funk rock band. Really cuts through the mix and the low B is killer!

Yamaha TRB 5II 5 String:
My first decent bass. MIJ, strung with round wounds. Rosewood board. All stock. My preferred 5er for Blues and R&B.

JV series Squier Precision:
MIJ 80s, had very old EMGs when i picked her up but now has a Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounder, D'addario rounds, old brass Kahler 'the claw' bridge.
This bass is my most played. It just fits in the mix in any band on any stage in any music, the tone isn't 100% there and she ways about a tonne but she is a workhorse.

Ibanez SRX360:
Great neck and tone but cheaply made. Used her in a Ska band for a long time just because of how comfortable the neck is. Needs some work to get to a gigable level again.

Westone ' The Rail' Bass:
Never seen another bass like it. Strung with flats. Good for real dubby sounds or an 80s cover band.

85 Ibanez Roadstar II 5 string- This was my only bass for over a decade, after playing fretless only for years before that. Toured with it, recorded with it, took it apart and put it back together. Very versatile, has active PUs but controls are blend/vol/tone. Had a replacement bridge installed which required the bridge PU be moved towards the neck PU.
This changed the sound of the bass for the better imo, can sound almost MusicMan like, or can doP and J sounds pretty closely, but clean with no grit or dirt. Not sterile sounding at all though.

1985 Ibanez Roadstar II 5 string- Essentially the twin of the first one, made a couple of months apart. Looked for another like the first to make fretless, took a couple years to find one. Did the defret, really like it although the board could use some tlc.
Because the PU placement is stock, it sounds a little brighter than the other, currently has flats but that may change.

1984 Squier SQ series Jazz bass- MIJ, this was my first Fender style bass after many years of playing, never played one that I liked that I could afford. Got this cheap from CL, needed strings and some saddle screws, pretty easy fix. Put a threaded saddle bridge on it and it's just a really great playing bass. Not sure yet where it fits in the mix, seems to get lost sometimes.

1983 Squier SQ series P bass- Another CL find, traded a Squier E series Strat for it as those are more common than an SQ Squier. Came with a Badass bridge which quickly was replaced with a threaded saddle bridge (although the Badass does make a nice paperweight.) This is imo as good as most every other P bass I have played, including several pre-CBS models. When I'm just sitting around the house, this is the one I pickup. Just really nice.

'84 Fender Precision Elite II - Beautiful bass! Transparent green finish shows wood grain. Has two sets of Lace Sensors, 3-way switches for both pre and tone, and a massive bridge with fine tuners. Neck is chunky, nut is 1.75", fretboard is rosewood. It's a heavy bass, weighing 13+ lbs. Currently, I have D'Addario rounds on it, tuned to drop D. I let Aston Barrett borrow it for a show 10-12 years ago. He couldn't stop gushing over it. I found it online, 13 years ago, in Atlanta gospel music store for $700. It's the best sounding bass I've ever played.

'90 Fender HM - Have only had this one for less than 2 years. Snagged this one from a fellow TBer. Body was in rough shape - large paint chips, several gouges. I refinished it and painted it in a silverburst. Fretboard is rosewood. It looks more like a Strat - 3 Lace Sensor J pickups, 5-way switch, body is a little smaller. Also has a TBX control. I started the refin in Feb of last year. Just put it back together 5 days ago (yeah, I know). I've got it strung with Chromes, tuned standard E. I'm contemplating putting a Moses solid graphite neck on it. GASP! Tax return! hmmmmm....

'00 Fender Precision Special Deluxe - This one is a sunburst. Plays great, sounds great. Fretboard is maple. All stock except for a Badass II. This one was free due to a shipping error by zZounds. It's got D'Addario tapewounds on it, tuned standard E.

'04 Fender Dimension - I love love LOVE this bass! Looks like an Ibby SR. My understanding is that Fender hired some luthiers away from Ibby and this is what they came up with. It's very easy to play and has great natural timbre. It's a transparent amber. Has p/j pickup configuration, pao ferro fretboard, and a 3 band active EQ. It's wearing D'Addario rounds, tuned standard E. This is my #1.

I also have a Maestro fretless that's more of a conversational piece than a player. It's so insignificant that I've already spent too much time describing it.

2012 Gibson Flying V, Bought new for $899.00 at Guitar Center. I went in with the intention of buying a Fender Jazz. I played a used 2008 fender am st Jazz and wanted to like it but the action was lower than I like (I know that most of you do not believe there is such a thing as too low of action). I tried a 2012 Am. Special P and I liked it. My wife saw the Gibson and I reluctantly tried it. It was simply a blast to play. I find the short scale to be a plus and it allows me to fly down the FB. Fit and finish is actually great despite Gibsons reputation. I laid down the cash went home and simply can't get the smile off my face when I play it. The tone is a tad muddy but not overly so and it fits classic rock especially Led Zep and Cream. I love this bass and it is probablly in a tie for my favorite. BTW, I bought a three inch padded Ginson strap from Sweetwater and there is zero neck dive. I do not know the weight but it was hard on my shoulder when I was using a two inch strap.

2009 Fender American Special Jazz. After buying the Gibson I still wanted a Jazz. I had never owned a real Fender but have exlusevly played Jazz knock off's since 1979. I went to GC just to look and was actually thinking about buying an Epi Jack Cassidy on-line but saw this. I barely played it and bought it. They were asking $599 which seemed like a deal to me as it appears mint w/ the exception of having a single-ply black pick gaurd. I am not fond of the stock white any way. They gave me $80 trade for a dean edge that I had bought from a pawn shop for $60 with a hard shell case. I left with a Fender Jazz am sp three tone burst in a hardshell case for $520.00. I love the bass. It has a growly tone that cuts through the mix well and the neck is great. I have to admit that while the tone is better than the Gibson the Gibson is easier and more fun to play. I am spending about equal time with both.

Godin Freeway 4. 4-string PJ assembled in the US from parts made in Canada. I have had this for a while. Bought used from a local independent store for $300.00 with a very nice gig-bag (I still hate gig bags but I hate this one a little less). Before I had the Fender and Gibson I had a Stinger PJ (imported from Korea and set up in the Martin factory in the states) and the recent Dean Edge, with EMG passive Jazz pick ups. The Godin blew the other two out of the water. The pick-ups are not as hot as either the Fender or the Gibson (The gibson HH are the loudest passive's I have ever had). The neck is great. Thin Jazz style made of Rock Maple with a rosewood fretboard. Body is stained Maple that appears quilted. No PG so it is pretty plane Jane. I do not play it much anymore but it is a nice workhorse bass that I use if I want a P bass tone. For the price and quality mixed with the made in USA/Canada combination I cannot believe that Godin's are not more popular. It is a third place finisher but cost a third of the Gibson and half as much as the Fender. I will keep it until I find a P bass that I like enough to spend the money on which may be never since I am not a huge fan of P=necks. I keep my instruments out on stands and the other night I noticed that the Godin and Fender appear to have identical necks. This is a good thing because they are super fast necks but it made me wonder if the am special neck was not sourced from Godin (they appear identical and I know that Godin has supplied necks to other companies but will not identify which companies).

I do not play professionally so I really do not need three basses let alone another but if I have the money I could see a Fender P am standard, a Gibson Midtown ot a non reverse T-bird in the future but I am really looking at a Gibson SG RI. I played one for about a half hour at GC andit was great. Super light, short scale and fretboard blocks and MOP inlay head stock. I cannot see me paying $1400 but I could see me going $800 used. Ultimately the deal breaker may be the $130,000 my wife and I have from grad school that we have run out of deferments on

deeptubes, that Fender Dimension sounds pretty cool, never heard of it actually.
A quick google search makes me want to play one.
Thanks.
