Are There Any African American Bass Builders?

There's so many great African American bass players but I can't recall if I ever heard of any black luthiers. Or what about Latino, Asian or women builders? Just curious.

Just found out that Scott Ambush, the bass player from Spiro Gyra, builds basses.

Scott Ambush of Spyro Gyra offers his own line of basses. Does that count? Come to think of it, I can recall more Jewish builders.....great basses, more guilt.

There's the Funk Bass (very Alembic-like)

And although he is not a builder, Stanley Clarke helped to develop the Spellbinder Basses.

Isn't Louis Johnson making his own basses these days?

Pierre Harry Erizias from Montreal is the only black luthier I can think of.

Not really. A great bass is a great bass regardless of who makes it.

+1. Huge plus 1.

The last thing I think of when I order a bass is I wonder what colour the person is building it. That pretty much defines racism.

The OP asked a question and he said he was just curious. If you don't care, don't post in the thread please.

And, FWIW I don't agree that asking a question about the race of someone "defines racism."

No it doesn't and he asked a very valid question.

The late David Minniewather.

Ferdinand Pickett (he made the very first symbol guitar that Prince later made famous by another builder).

I don't think the OP meant for this to be anything negative about race it's an honest curious question if he had posted " Would you buy a bass from a black luthier" that would be different in my opinion.

It didn't take long for this to pop up. For crying out loud, he was just curious as to whether there are any African American bass builders. Where the hell is the racism in that? Your comment is disgusting.

I think it does matter. Why is it an issue to ask a question regarding the ethnicity or background of a product builder. When we can't talk about race is when it becomes an issue. If any bass player, or any one for that matter, chooses to support a business owner who comes from a certain racial or socioeconomic background, then it is their right to do so without being declared as a racist.

I didn't say the OP was racist asking if there are any african american luthiers, I was stating how it doesn't/shouldn't matter

For me to care about what colour the person building my bass, is racist. Which is why I don't care. Whether I want a black guy for positive or negative reasons, is still racist.
