Is there any bassist that play jazz with a P-bass?

Or any jazz track recorded with a P-bass...

Lots of electric Miles records from the 70s and Herbie Hancock from the same era featured P bass. I'm sure there's quite a bit more but those come to mind first.

Does Jazz Fusion count? If it does, there are a bunch. Some of my favorites are Paul Jackson and Freddie Washington with Herbie Hancock, Alfonso Johnson on some of the early Weather Report albums, Mark Wood with Mideski, Martin, & Wood, Billy Sheehan with Niacin, and Marcello Gulliani iwth Erik Truffaz.

If you are talking about split-coil specifically, then for electronic yes, for acoustic, no.

Ralphe Armstrong played a fretless P with the Mahavishnu Orchestra - I read an article somewhere in which Ralphe saying that it's one of the reasons he got the job!

Chuck Rainey played a P - some jazzy lines with Steely Dan and early Rickie Lee Jones (I think)....not really jazz, though.

Agree with the Fusion thing - a natural home for the P.

Of course not. Jazz is played with Jazz basses. That's how it got the name.

People using Precision basses always play in the genre of Precision. Silly.

That's why jazz guitar players only play Jazzmasters, right?

does little to explain stratocaster or telecaster

precision was meaningful when it was unveiled as a precise alternative to DB

I found this video a while ago. Very cool use of a P bass.

I play jazz with a parts P bass that wears old flats. Works well, and I can get a thumpier sound than the other bassist who plays a Jazz copy.

I use a P/J (as well as other basses). Does that count?

Generally speaking you do not have to play Jazz music with a Jazz bass

I have seen P basses being used in anything from rock and metal to slap, jazz and r&b. It all comes down to personal preference and desired tone/sound.

Actually, truth be told, if you even ATTEMPT to play jazz with a Precision, you will be visited late at night by thugs from the Federation of Real Jazz Players Who Only Use A Jazz Bass....or the FRJPWOUAJB....not a good thing to witness.......
