I've read interviews with musicians that played with him and said his P-bass looked liked it been through hell and that Jamerson preferred it that way. The funk brothers said he NEVER took care of his P bass and he believed he got better tone from it the more he didn't take care of it. Bob Babbitt said he never changed his strings...NEVER and that it was heavily bowed. But, he could play the heck out of it.

Here's Richard Davis playing what is almost certainly a P-Bass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZzXOQeby68

People using Precision basses always play in the genre of Precision. Silly. | This is kind of irrelevant but I just find it too funny.

It was all straight ahead stuff, but it was an amazing sound he got. It was setup so well, too. Easiest bass I've ever played as well just an amazing sound and feel. At the time I was kind of a "new tech" snob and everything needed to have nice hardware, laminate necks with graphite rods and active preamps, etc.
I was a bit of a fool like a kid who rejects old baseball cards, something I did, too. Ugh.
Another local Bay Area guy named Matt Fink used some other beatup P and man, he just OWNED that beast and was one of the best cats I've ever seen, even after seeing really famous players in LA.
But yes, the Fender P-Bass can do straightahead jazz just as good as any instrument.

I was stunned we got to the 3rd page before this master was named.
