I wouldn't buy it without seeing it in person and playing/hearing it. Also I agree. Offer than than he's asking.

can you say clif burton yo?

seriously, I think that's pretty awesome, and I'd buy it and leave it as is,or you could get some actual ric pups(not actually from ric I don't think) and still have it be less than new.

go for it!!!

You can get replacement OEM pickups from pick of the rics if you wanted, or directly from Ric I think.

Thanks for the input everybody. Think I will try to haggle him down to $900, and if he'll go for that I'll buy it. As I said, I already have a high gain bridge pickup. All I'll need is the neck pickup and a pick guard and 'm good to go. I am not too concerned about the bridge so long as the bass plays nice. I'll probably eventually replace it, but it's not an emergency situation.

Hey, bygoneguy - just noticed you were in my home town (actually, I'm in Pointe-Claire). WOW! Where can you find a Ric for a grand in Montreal??? When I pull out my Ric here, people act like they've seen a unicorn, you just don't find Rics around town so if you can get it for $900... well, I'm in tears.

Good luck with the 4001. I actually took a big gamble and bought a 4003 Ric off of ebay for $1500. Very risky, but the seller had a good reputation. And I wasn't disappointed.

It was modded with a Seymour Duncan as the bridge pup. At first I was concerned about not getting the Ric sound, but the S/D pickup roars. So I'm not bothered by the mod because getting it back to stock is very straightforward and I'm having fun with it now.

I use medium to heavy gauge strings, and apparently my 2004 4003 has a neck that can take those easily. I have heard that the 4001's could be fussy when you strayed away from the stock gauge strings.
