I am tentatively thinking of getting a Carvin PB4 (4 string fretted.) My giant hands tend to prefer wider necks, though I an do "chunky" 1.5" (Jazz width) necks as long as there is some meat to the back of them (junk in the trunk?
The new Carvin PB4s have a 1.54 inch neck - pretty much a Jazz width. 14" radius is standard for the fretboard. I'm wondering if maybe the optional 10" or 12" radius may make it feel thicker to me due to the rounder fretboard. Or maybe I am thinking about this backwards?
Anyway, I just don't want to order one and end up with a pencil thin neck. I have an SB5001 and the neck is nice. But that's a 5-string so it's hard to compare. I've never played an SB4000. I've owned a couple L series Carvin 4 strings back in the day but I don't really remember what the necks were like.
P.S. Same bass, different question - is it possible to swap out those Gotoh GB7s with 3/8" Hipshot Ultralite Y-key tuners? Or even cloverleaf Ultralites?
