Well, it is in Hawaii. But it is an Epiphone 4 string electric mandolin, the Mandobird. I play a little mandolin, and since I am a long time Thunderbird owner I just had to have one. I also want to get a Firebird, so I have bass, guitar and mandolin birds.
A ThunderUke would be AWESOME! I NEED one.

The question is here in the Pickups section: Replacement pickups for a Thunderbird . Any advice you all have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

Found, bid on and won a Tokai T Bird on the 'bay. Vintage white, black hardware. Will post picks when it gets here (will be next week, paying on Friday with seller's permission) and politely ask for a number!
Here's a pic from the auction

Looks Great!
I have added you to the roster as #318, it's on the previous page, the list is so long I don't post it on every page anymore - Thunderbirds are that popular!
I don't own a Tokai, so I'd really appreciate your thoughts and some more pictures when your new bass arrives.
Congratulations, it's beautiful in Classic White! |

I took my U-bass on one trip and that was cool but it gave me something extra to carry around the airports, and something that catches the eye of customs that they want to inspect.
So I had this Mandobird and came up with the idea of restringing it with heavy gauge guitar strings to EADG (instead of GDAE mandolin tuning). It is two octaves above a bass, but tuned the same so it works for me. And I can throw it in my checked bag. With that and my iPad or iPhone it gets the job done.

Yesterday after I finished rehearsing I finally went through with an idea I've had for a long time, and took the pickguard off to see how my bird would look w/o it.
And to my surprise I didn't find the hole and cables that I've seen on some of your birds.
Did I misread or misunderstood that all birds had this underneath the pickguard?
Mine is a I guess 2011, Epiphone Thunderbird IV.
Thanks in advance!
By the way, REALLY digging how it looks "pickguardless", I safely stored the guard and will try this for some time. And the electrical tape was a quick and cheap fix because the input started screwing each time I would plug/unplugg a cable.

The bolt-on versions have a hole drilled straight thru the neck pocket and the pickup cavities to feed the wires. You can't do that on the neck thru models. Not sure how it is on the newer neck-thru Epi's?? Those might have the same route under the pickguard.

Makes you wonder why they can do without it on certain models but not the main one???

It would be easy to go with the no-guard look on those then. I like some of them without the guard.
