It seems like an obvious thing to do would be to practice against a drone note. You'll hear what sounds well-intonated, even if that intonation isn't the same intonation you get on a fretted.

And the big bonus of sounding like a bagpipe

It took me nearly 25 years to really get on the fretless wagon. Now that I have, I love to play funky on it.

Nothing sounds quite like that ultra-wide vibrato, done like Bootsy if Bootsy were gonna do it.
