| | | | New modifications So, what happened in the last couple of weeks? Thanks to BillyB_from_LZ, how helped me getting some new pickup covers (THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!) was was able to integrate a new 6 string J pickup at the bridge without detroing the routing for the screw lugs. As you certainly now, the lugs of "standard" 101mm wide 5/6 string J pickup are much wider than that of the 4 string. However, these covers (the same as they use on e.g. Alleva Coppolo's or AtelierZ's) have the same lug-wide as 95mm 4/5 string pickups, but they are 110mm (!) wide. Hence, enough space for a fancy 6 string pickup
So to list what else is done:
Customized (by myself) Wilkinson Lic Vintage MWPB5 Pickup - basically two 3 string sections, one of them "reversed" to get a hum canceling effect, and both minus one pole piece to keep them underneath 3 string only, one spare 3 string cover without logo. And finally, I improved the electronics by change the selector switch circuit to have a serial setting in the mid position.
Now I'm struggling with my self if I should put the wide pickup covers also into the 5 string?
As I will modify the switch circuit I would touch him anyway....
What's your opinion?
Well just to list the full modifications on both basses (news fat):
• a fancy 5 String P-bass with P-pickup (Wilkinson asymmetric WBP5, plus WBJ5W in a “4 string” cover, plus Artec EXP circuit, plus 4 Schaller BML “long-neck” tuner and 1 “short-neck”, self-made tortoise pickguard, plus brass nut, plus ABM “mono-rail” bridges, plus HipShot string retainer, string-through ferrules, doom knobs, vinyl block inlays and 13 times M3 thread inserts for the pickguard (as the battery is underneath it))
• and an even fancier 6 String P-Bass with P-pickup (Artec P-Bass,plus the original Squier 5 string J, customized Wilkinson "MWPB6" pickup, "Australian" (don't know the manufacturer, but bought it in Australia) J 6 string pickup, plus HipShot HB6C tuner, customized tortoise pickguard, plus brass nut, plus ABM “mono-rail” bridges, plus HipShot string retainer, string-through ferrules, doom knobs, vinyl block inlays and 13 times M3 thread inserts for the pickguard (as the battery is underneath it))
Next would be thread inserts for the thump rests and the electric mods for the 5er

| | | | Here is my Squier project:
I removed the frets and planed and sanded the board. Then, I removed the pickup and had my tech put in a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder. I also asked him to remove the original pots and jacks and upgrade them. He used some cloth covered wiring that he had left over and used an orange drop cap. The sound is amazing.
Since the pic was taken, I have put flat top barrel knobs on the pots.
Next, I plan to replace the tuning machines and the bridge. Nothing too fancy, the bass was under 200 bucks. Ultimately, I am going to have my tech fill in the slots with maple strips and make it flat and smooth. I am not going to epoxy the board in that I favor the feel of wood.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Jan 2013 Location: Bucks Co, PA | | Here are the first couple of mods to my squier. I changed the pickguard and bridge. The only issue I had is that the pickup opening was a bit small and I had to shave it a bit to make it fit. The parts came from Dragonfire Guitars, so I didn't spend much money. I have a replacement pickup that I am going to install. I haven't done so yet. I need to practice soldering a bit first. In the future I will probably replace the knobs and tuning machines to black. The bass didn't cost much, so I am trying to do this all as economically as possible. I was very happy with how the pickguard looks. Much better than the tuxedo look.

I believe the bass you showed us in Post No. 134 qualifies. That combined with your question tells the assigner of numbers that you want one, so now it should happen.

First I bought an Audere preamp on the classified, the oem pickups are really noisy so I bought a set of Bartolini 57J1 L/S
and installed them yesterday I now have a Super J
