Kudos. Shortly thereafter, I found another early 90's black fretless Foundation on ebay and jumped on it.
$225.00 delivered to my door, including a set of new flatwounds, the original hardcase, and what appears to be very few hours of previous playing time--I think it was a fair deal. The action agrees with my "pumpkin" (as my students call them) hands and the sound is pretty f@#king cool. http://s291.beta.photobucket.com/use...tml?sort=3&o=6
I also found a Super Ferrite Foundation on ebay, Got it for $90.00 and even though the transaction was smooth, it wasn't exactly portrayed as a "project" nor did the sellers picture reveal that it had been stripped of paint, was missing a saddle, and needed triage in the wiring cavity. Nonetheless, after a lil work, its up and running. http://s291.beta.photobucket.com/use...tml?sort=3&o=7 http://s291.beta.photobucket.com/use...tml?sort=3&o=8
The accquistion of these two Foundations combined with the $50.00 Foundation S I found on Craigslist has made the Peavey plunge truly refreshing. That's the sunburst with SF's and flats, right next to another fretless foundation without SF's (that I got a couple weeks ago...bad GAS, I know).
I got home late from practice Monday night and forgot that this was delivered after a heavy shower. I got up in terror when I realized that the bass had been sitting out all night!
I only had time to open the box and inspect the bass quickly before going to work. When I got home and plugged her up, I noticed there wasn't any sound coming from the bridge pup. I opened up the back and this is what I saw:
So, comparing this to what I've seen posted and in the schematics, it looks like the PO switched out the pots to B500K's, got rid of the other caps on the pots, replaced the jack ( possibly), and managed to snap a ground wire from the jack to the bridge pot (maybe while tightening the jack?), all the while getting the soldering rosin all over the factory shielding. The good news? When I jiggle the cable in the jack, I do get sound from the bridge until I shift and then the bridge goes away again.
I want to clean up this mess, should I stick with the B500's or just go back to factory? I've never heard a fretless foundation with SF's before, and I only started getting Peaveys because of TB. What do you guys think?
I was contemplating putting a preamp in one of these (emg btc?), but i do like the passive tone, so maybe I'll just go with an outboard pedal instead.

Never got around to it, but I expect it might an interesting mod.
If you decide to restore the elecs to original PM me, I have the values of the little caps that comprise the "tone compensation" circuit that was originally in there. It's part of the Foundation "flavor", but the SF's will still sound good wired up like a standard jazz bass. |

Thanks again. | Nice "infection!":
About my black fretless...
I had considered purchasing it (I am 99% sure it was the same bass) a couple of years ago when it popped up on the local craigslist. I talked myself out of it saying I didn't need a fretless. Then I believe Invaidprotocol bought it, and I kicked myself.
Invalidprotocol put it up on the local craigslist, and again I talked myself out of it, and I kicked myself.
Then Invalidprotocol put it up here, and I didn't see the ad for quite a while and i thought it was sold, and I kicked myself again. I was starting to hurt from the kicking.
After it looked like he wasn't going to ship it, I asked if he was still wanting a local sale. And I bought it and am very happy I finally did. Hope I didn't step on any toes but it is in a good home!

Paid more than I wanted to, but I'll live! This one has the visible grain on the neck, and the color is a cool purple/ blue /silver hybrid. I'm thrilled!!

Still, this one looks near mint and still has the plastic on the back covers. Super excited about the neck grain!

I have a "closet classic" mint, as-new Sarzo sig that I'm looking to move. I bought this bass from Dan Lenard at LAG and if you know Dan, you know he doesn't deal in junk. Dan told me the original owner bought it new, played it for two weeks, decided he wanted to be a drummer and placed the bass in the case and put it under his bed. Here's the link to the LAG page for this bass.. http://luthiersaccessgroup.com/dt_ca...ey-rudy-sarzo/
Everything is still there.. I played it for maybe all of an hour total and it's been in the case so if anyone's interested hit me up. Some more pics: |

IMO, the Sarzo model is one of the best (maybe the best) 4-string basses ever offered by a major manufacturer. |
