Used Fender Jazz 24 yay or nay?
 

$350, good condition, no case. What say you, talkbass? If nay or meh, explain why please, if you feel like it.

I tried one of these years ago when I was a jazz bass player. GC was almost giving them away..I was not impressed at all.

What was unimpressive about it?

I'm a sucker for pickguardless Fenders. There isn't a whole lot of information about this one. There's almost nothing on here, and very mixed opinions on Fender forums. I wonder why this isn't popular.

I also love a Fender with no guard. If I remember it was just dull and lifeless in tone. I might of had the noiseless pups which I am not a fan of. It is a great looking bass but my old MIM jazz blew it away so I walked away.

150 sounds like a very fair price. it's a jazz bass with extra frets - sounds like a winner if you dig Jazz basses. And pickups can always be replaced.

Who's selling it? Maybe offer $300?

150 sounds like an amazing price. That's really good for a regular MIM.

I love these basses and I'm on the lookout myself.

I had a 2005. Nice bass, great looks, well constructed. It had Duncan bass lines in it and an active pre amp. I'm not a big fan of actives and that's why I ended up selling it. The one public knock was the pre amp. It's pretty easy to put the battery in backwards and if you do, it frys the pre. I paid $350 for mine and thought it was a good deal for a mint, used bass with a nice hard shell case. I love jazz basses, but honestly, I don't play high enough up the neck to make use of those extra frets.

Way too much money.

It was a Cor-Tek (Korea) contract build and sometimes spotty. Some here had problems with them.

They were closed out for $199 on a number of sites.

24 frets is ridiculous on a bass anyway.

I own one, and I dig it. I'll eventually replace the pups with Barts to fit my tonal preferences, but it plays well, sounds good, and looks lovely.


Opinion does not equal fact. There are many very successful bassists who utilize their 24 fret boards, with excellent results. How about you keep your 20-fretters and I keep my 24-fretters, and we don't worry so much about what other people enjoy?

I am not a great bassist by any stretch, but I prefer to play a 24 fret bass and do use the entire fretboard. The 2 octave neck makes it easier for me to find my way around in the upper register.

In any case, the Jazz 24 was not a great seller, they were blown out for $200-250 at a few retailers and I believe the older noiseless PU were some of Fenders worst. Might be a good $200 bass to upgrade though.

Believe me, I'd prefer your 24-fret bass to any of my 24-fret basses :)

My jazz 24 is the model that came stock with the Basslines pups. Great tone if you're not looking for a really modern slap-happy tone like I am. One thing I dig about the electronics is that the freq of the mid knob is perfect for adding a bit of P-bass woof to the neck pup, giving me the ability to cop a fairly convincing P bass tone.

I own one of these basses and can run down a couple good and poor quality issues of the bass.

On the positive side it has nice pickups, tuners, and string thru body. My problems have been that as stated before, this was a Korean spec bass. It does not match-up with any other fender bass. The dick that had it before me stripped the truss rod nut and I've been waiting for over a month for GC to find the replacement thru fender. The body and neck won't match anything else, so don't think if things go wrong you can just frankenbass it.

Lastly the bridge does not have grooves cut for the saddles, and several models I have encountered have bridges that are off just a tad. It sucks when your G string rides the edge at the bottom and no replacement works with the string thru feature of this spacing. I had mine machined by a friend.
