5 is Precision bass the 230 is supposed to be a batch number. 2 for February, 9 for 1969 and B for the width at nut.

Based on the latest date, it would be a '70. Fender used parts on hand and not necessarily specific order. The body could be from '70.

Serial seems '69 - but I'd go with the pot date codes. My '59's neck plate's serial number has a '58 date code, but a rosewood/maple neck... so, '59

You never date off the pot codes. There wouldbe 10 zillion 1966 basses. As a dealer we use the latest date..

Yeah, that's most likely a '70.

You could also take out the pickups to see if there is a date underneath the coils. I have a '69, and have just swapped the original pups back in, and they are late 68. The summer of love. Might be more of a hassle than you want, but it would be another point of reference.

If I remember correctly, It has to be a "9", because it stands for 1969, if it were a 5 then it would have been a 1965, but in 1965 the dates were stamped in a different format, more like "5 Jul 65 C" or something.

"5" stands for precision bass
"B" stands for neck width
