VINTAGE FENDER NITRO LACQUER HELP???

Did Fender use a sanding sealer on there solid color alder bodies?
exmp. so say a 1970 p bass in custom black. was the nitrocellulose lacquer painted right over the alder wood? or was it sealed first?

Fender stopped using "nitro" to finish bodies in about 1968.

A 1970 Fender had a ton of poly on it.

I think the top coat on the body and face of the headstock was still nitro in '70. Sealer was poly.(?)

So, no point in the nitro, then! Just marketing mumbo-jumbo.

They started fullerplasting the bodies (sealing with poly) in like 59 or 60 I believe.

+1

I've never heard wood breathe

Before "FullerPlast" it was some other version of poly.

I know that with acoustic instruments..putting ANYTHING on the wood is going to have an effect on tone.

But my J & Ps aren't acoustics...

I did away with both on my P-bass and just oiled the bare wood. Sounds louder and more growly playing it unplugged practicing at home. Makes no difference whatsoever amplified. Especially at a gig.

There is information "out there" about the colors...at one time it was white-ish...making the early sunburst color 'brighter'

Here's a GREAT link...

It's explained mid article
