I have an OLP stingray and a Squier P/J bass, WHY is my olp substantially louder that my squier under identical settings..? Both are passive.

Even though the squier has 2 pickups?

The Squire's p'ups aren't as close together as the Ray's, and probably have fewer windings in each coil. Plus, the Ray has larger pole pieces as well. All add up to being louder.
Then if the Ray has both coils in series as Jensby suggests, that would add significantly to it's output.
I'm just guessing though.
