I did, in fact, pull the colors from a Le mans poster (the Gulf Racing colors from the Porsche 917's) and sent a rough sketch to Greasygroove. They mocked it up and after a couple emails, we had what I wanted. There is a light blue circle that is hard to see in the pic I posted but it makes the number look recessed. That was not intentional but looks cool up close. Quote:

Funny thing (to me) is that I saw a GT40 in my neck of the woods last summer that was painted in the Gulf colors and wearing the number 9! I wish I could have caught up to that guy for a car/bass photo shoot (not that I had my bass with me but...). I only saw him once.

Another takeoff on the idea would be to do a cutout in the shape of an F-hole on a hollow body. I really like that idea but it would require patience to cut it well. I suppose some of the custom PG makers would do it for you. Quote:

To me, a pickguard is just as important of a design decision as anything else on the instrument! How it is shaped, how it works w/the body, what material is it made of, what colour it is, and all based in the thought that it is there to protect, hide, and highlight all at the same time! Shown is my "what if" Tele fretless sporting its custom designed and cut tort plate.
There is mostly variations on a theme standard pg's (which is cool) on here so far and hope to see more custom designed/cut guards that have to be out there. Let's see some of those unique pg's! |

| Would this concept have anything to do with Adam Clayton's P-Bass, that has a large part of the pickguard missing? I'll search for a link... |
