Usually on Wals this old, the age may show in the electronics: scratchy pots, and output jacks that tend to cut-out when wiggled.
It looks like it's in nice condition, and a mega plus that the original brown fiberglass case is included.
****, of course you are right, call it denial on my part, because I'm turning 30 come april....

Allright, thanks again, if it's still there, I'm definately gonna check it out

Definitely have him pop off the rear cover for you while you're there so you can see the boards, and also see the build data that is written on the plastic cover.

Is this an ok price ? What are some pointers on spotting a fake Wal ?

That is a fantastic price!!! Man i'd love to get my hands on a Wenge facing Wal!

i'm not gonna repeat what Mike already said, if you do find it to have scatchy pots or crackling in the instrument jack...it'll be an easy job for some contact cleaner..or a trusted luthier. also it does look like its missing the black plastic cover piece right on the heal of the neck near the truss rod. lol, also looks like the electronics may be sprouting a tree from the looks of the back of bass pic.

Also use the pic of the electronics for reference - so if you see some weird wiring in there like a different sized gauge wire or what have you, it'd be more reason to plug her in and check it out before you buy. not entirely a deal breaker, but it'd be a good reason to negotiate further. Also sightly detune the tuner pegs and make sure they are nice and snugly. I had one previously that had a broken tuner peg which was not disclosed to me until I changed out the strings. I also just found a couple weeks ago that my 5er has the same issue, again not disclosed to me . Not a big deal, but it sucks to find out after paying for it.

I posted some pics here if you need to see what i'm referring too click here

also.....what he said

Speaking of my 5er. I'm playing with the idea of trading her for another Wal 4 banger if anyone is interested - not sure about selling her outright, but i'm all ears!! PM me if you have any ideas. Let me know. That extra string always seems to get neglected
i had bought this from thebassgallery in uk, which was actually previously owned by a fellow TB'er mattewfoote.

Mike, i can now relate to you when you had yours lol

thanks Caca de Kick for the tip concerning the electronics and rear cover, definately gonna check this out

thanks kulit17 for the advice regarding the tuner pegs, gonna take a look at them

yes, if nothing else fails I'm going to play the Wal in person sometime next week, I'll keep you updated.

Thanks alot,
Chris

Crazy coincidence...three identicle wenge fretless MkI's available all at the same time:
One here on TB that someone wants to trade for a Jazz.
One in Austria, complete with brown case.
Another in England on basschat, with hiscox case, good price.

And in Japan, here's a highly optioned late ProI. It's pricey, but looks like an olive ash body under the burst and a great finish on the neck

The only thing particular to the Wal when it comes to that is that the XLR output won't send a signal unless there is something plugged into the 1/4" standard output. Either another cable or just a plug.

Hey guys,

just came back from testing the Wal Bass.

judging from my limited experience with Wal, the bass is in awesome condition for an instrument this age, the body and headstock have some minor dinks and scratches, but the back of the neck is in pristine condition, couldn't find anything on there.

also, the electronics work perfectly, tried every knob and the push/pull - no crackling or scratching, looked inside, the electronics look exactly like the pics you posted and the build data confirms it as a 1985.

I didn't buy it however because for me the sparks didn't fly so to speak.

Thanks again for all your input.
Best regards,
Chris
