| | | | Warmoth I was in the midst of modifying my Jazz V 24 when I stumbled upon these basses and the whole build your own system. I bought Nordy NJ5FS pups, Hipshot A style, Ultralight Y, and Audere Z mode 4 band. Now I'm just going to Gecko out and get an Ash body with Quilted Maple Top and Wenge/Ebony neck!
This will be my dream bass...
I had to sell my MTD 535 during the recession and the Jazz just never came close.
Looking forward to the smell of copper, solder and New Bass!! |

Near as I can tell, I'm at least the fourth owner of this bass. It was first introduced by mikeruss in post #33 of this thread and he wasn't the original owner. I got it from Tomservo-Crow about 3 weeks ago and I don't know if he got it from mikeruss or if there was another owner in between them.
The first photo is the original configuration. The next photos show the configuration right before I bought it and the third group show how it looks now, after I cleaned up the previous work. I made the pickguard to hide the olympic size pickup rout and cover some holes. It's got a Nordstrand MM5.2 pickup and Nordstrand 3 band EQ preamp and sounds pretty darn good. I originally planned on putting in a pair of Big Splits, but it sounds so good I'm going to leave it as is. I'm planning on getting some Hipshot Ultralight tuners soon and yesterday I made and installed some threaded steel neck inserts and used some stainless 10-24 bolts to remount the neck. It made a surprising improvement in sustain and tone and evened out some notes that were a little lacking. It's subtle, but I noticed the difference immediately.
Here's a link to a thread about the initial work I did on it: Gecko resurrection

Very nice work on the new pickguard, as well as the cleanup work on the body and the headstock.
I hadn't thought of using the Gary Willis "speed knobs" on the tuners for a Gecko, and I'm glad to see these being used again here. I used a set of these (bought from the man himself) many years ago, on a defretted Ibanez 6-string monster. They look nice on the Gecko headstock as well.
Welcome to the club - you're #21.

Thanks. I'm really happy with the results. This bass sounds the best of the 3 I have and is lighter than the other 2 even though they're both 4 strings (with Warmoth necks).
I put the Willis speed knobs on because it had a slight tendency to neck dive when seated and I wanted to see if that would take care of it and it did. A couple of the tuners are worn though and are really hard to turn with the speed knobs, so I'm getting a set of Hipshot Ultralights for it. I bought a couple sets of the speed knobs years ago when Gary Willis sold them on his
website. That started an email exchange between us for several months when he found out that I'm a mountain biker too. That's mainly what we talked about.
