Warrior @ NAMM featuring Keith Horne

I love the look and tone of Warrior basses. I also think Keith Horne is an incredible player who is just a touch under the radar. I love his left hand upside down slapping!

Keith plays in the Richmond area with two bands that I know of. One is Bop Nation and they are mostly a jazz type group. The other is Sportsbar Rockstar, a variety act three piece which is awesome and you should hear them do Rush YYZ!!!! They play often, both bands, at Wabi Sabi's in Petersburg VA.

Keith is not only an incredible player, but a good human being, who happens to be pretty darn humble! To watch him play left handed with the bass strung "upside down" or righty.........will blow your mind especially when you think about the finger positioning and the total rethink that the average right handed or left handed bassist would have to really think about!

Is he still touring with major Nashville artists? I guess with computer technology, he can do a lot of studio work at home now, and he doesn't have to be in Nashville. It would be wonderful to see him do a bar gig!

Come to Petersburg on a Wednesday night and I will join you to see them play.........we could get a TB group together!

This is Snoop Evans, Fred Hammond's bassist when the big man isn't doing it himself, on a Warrior too. I love the way these basses sound. I know a local GC had a light ash one with a maple fingerboard and Bartolini skinny soapbars. If it were $1,500 instead of $2,200, I might have risked pissing off my wife by buying it because it played great and was feather light!

Keith was Trisha Yearwood's tour bassist for a stretch. She used Pomeroy on her recordings, though.

It's a very different sounding way of playing for sure. You tend to play lines almost opposite of what a right-handed player would because of your high strings being on the top instead of the bottom. Most people are so curious about how I slap and pluck playing that way. I still slap with my thumb and pluck with my index finger, it's kind of a swooping motion! I used to slap years ago with my hand and pluck with my thumb, but it didn't have the right sound to me.

Not a fan of those basses, but LOVE Keith's playing. I heard him with Trisha a few times, and he is just something. If I remember right, he used a 'Munji tribute pink Lakland' with her

I like them but a simple 5 string with a full Bartolini setup would do me fine. a friend of mine has an older model NAMM bass he bought somewhere. It had a single MM pickup with a slap switch. Man that thing smoked.

It is hard to go wrong with a single MM pickup as long as its in the right position.

Those MM/J basses fascinate me although I am a sucker for the skinny Bartolini soapbars.

I hear you about not liking Warrior basses. As for me, playing Urban Gospel (poorly) is pretty much what I do all of the time when I play out, and basses with that modern tone really do it for me. That said, a nice Jazz bass still sounds good in any setting!
