| Warwick Corvette Rockbass Issue

Recently I bought a 5 string Corvette Rockbass from guitar center. Now i was just wondering if anyone else had this problem. when im sitting down playing it im pretty much okay my hands can wrap around the neck fairly easy it much more comfortable. but when i stand up and play i have an extremely difficult time wrapping my hands around the neck. My fingers like spaz out when i play when standing up even though ive built some good strength in there. but meanwhile i'll play my 4 String Ibanez and i'll fly all over the fingerboard.
ive tried adjusting the strap but that did very little. Is this a technique problem or just poorly designed neck?
