Warwick standard neck or broadneck advice

Sign in to disble this ad
Iv been playing an Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 5 for 10 years and am now interested in a Warwick Streamer 5. I LOVE the string spacing on the Musicman, which leads to the question-Which warwick neck do i go with? Standard or broadneck? which would help me be more at home, being as used to the musicman string spacing as i am? Any advise is welcome! (also, before you ask, I am fingers and thumbs 100%-no picks here!)

you've got to try it out, some hate the broadneck some love it, only way to tell which you are is by having it in your hands.

Thanks for the quick response puddin. A problem of mine also is that any stores that do carry warwick never have a broadneck model. Maybe you could suggest another bass w the same neck dimensions i might be able to get my hands on?

I played my SR5 exclusively for nine years before I got another bass. I say that only so you understand that I was *very* used to that string spacing. I got a Streamer Stage I 5-string which comes standard as a broadneck, 20mm spacing.

For me, it wasn't a tough transition at all. Yes, it's wider but I think the neck itself is very comfortable and the spacing turned out not to be an issue.

That said, when I went back to my SR5 I did find I was more prone to pulling the G off the neck... I think most SR5 players have probably done that at one time or another!

Anyway, the only way to know is to try it for yourself but for me it wasn't nearly the challenge that I might have expected.

Would the broadneck make the body itself any bigger? how is the neck-dip?

I don't think so, but I don't have a Streamer with narrow spacing to compare it to. Seems pretty normal compared to my other basses. The horn is over the 14th fret but I don't experience any neck dive.

What about a Warwick with two necks.... Wouldn't that be something...

The spacing at 20mm is the same as many 4-stringers. I like the 20mm spacing at the bridge on my broadneck. I make less mistakes with my right hand with it

I went from a thin Ibanez SR885 to Warwick BO 6 Thumb (which I believe to be a broadneck), with only minimal time to adjust. I just moved my thumb position on the back of the neck and I was good to go. (Same deal when I purchased a Conklin GTBD-7 a few months after... Adjusted my thumb position and go.)

The SR5 has between 16mm and 17mm for string spacing. The Warwick broadneck has around 20mm. I'd recommend the standard.

The SR5 spacing is 17.5mm

For me, going to the SR5 actually felt wide compared to the Ibanez Roadstar II 5'er I was using. That sucker was narrow! It's funny what you get used to.

Yep, good ole 17.5. I can transition from this to 19 easily. 17-18 is my preferred area though.

I would go with the standard neck personally.

Really? Are the OLP basses any different in spacing? Playing an OLP 5-string felt like it was more narrow than my 16.5mm 6-strings.

Yep, the EBMM is 17.5mm spacing. I did a little Googling and what I've read leads me to believe the OLP 5 does have narrower spacing than the EBMM, but I haven't yet found what the number is.

On the EBMM forum there was a thread that asked about the OLP Tony Levin model and the answer was thought to be 16mm... can't confirm or deny that though.

Edit: according to this, the OLP bridge was measured at 65mm center B to center G. That comes out to 16.mm-ish. http://webcache.googleusercontent.co...&ct=clnk&gl=us
