Weak D & G strings on P-bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Just starting to play my new-to-me 2009 p-bass in our local old guys jam band. I was surprised at the weakness of the D and G strings; could hardly hear them over the general commotion of the band. I'm going to bring the bass in for a set up next week, but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue and how they resolved it.

Another bass I use with the same rig, 90's active (deluxe?) p-bass does not have this problem and is significantly louder.

Thanks!

Leo Fender designed basses some times give you better E and A strings and not as strong of D and G strings.

I probably wouldn't bother spending the money to get your P bass setup since you can do it yourself easily enough. Just try raising the pickup on the G D side and see if that helps.

I had some time to fiddle with the bass today. Lowered the E/A pick up significantly and that seems to have helped. Also raised the action some as I had lowered it a much as I could and it seemed too low to me. Playing with the band will be the true test though...

The usual solution is adjusting pickup height so the strings are all equal distance from the pickup poles. It could also be you've got bum D and G strings, or perhaps they twisted when you installed them.
