Weak Jazz Bass

A couple weeks ago I was in the market for a second bass/back up bass to my passive 1998 MIM Fender Precision Standard. I thought about just getting another Precision, however went with a Jazz to have both a P and J and also I recieved a great deal on it. It is a passive 2007 MIM Fender Jazz Standard. Anyways, last night at band practice was the first time I used it with my main rig. Throughout our practice I tried dialing in tone with both pickups, one or the other, and the tone knob. Problem was it seemed a lot quieter and excuse my words, but less "ballsy" than my Precision. I also had to turn the volume on my amp close to half, whereas with my Precision I barely have to go past a quarter volume. From what I heard the tone was alright, but my Precision just sounds a lot better. I know I know they are two different models of Fender basses, however this is the second time I have gave a Jazz a chance and I feel a little under impressed with it. Not knocking the Jazz because I am sure it is a great bass, just turns out it appears to be not for me again.

Jazz basses are not for me either, I have tried giving a couple of them a chance, they just don't have the balls a P does...... just tooooo thin sounding for my likings....

check your pickup height, as well as to make sure the pots are wired correctly and working.
my jazz runs a bit hotter than my p, both with dimarzio pickups, but it sounds like something it up with yours.

I prefer a Jazz to a Precision. I prefer vanilla ice cream to chocolate. But sometimes chocolate is just what I'm in the mood for.

To each their own.

A jazz is wired parellel by default. What might help the ballsiness on a jazz is a series/parallel switch (easily done without drilling by replacing one of the volume pots with a push-pull. ). Covered in extensis elsewhere on the forum; schematic is here Wiring Diagram

The first thing I always do when I get a P or J is drag all the other Fenders out and make sure the pickup heights are set for consistant volume among all the basses.
P's are wired in series so naturally a fatter output, so they usually get adjusted lower to match the Jazz volume.
