Wear on NON Fender basses?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just out of curiousity, how many of you guys have basses that are not Fender or Fender style basses that have wear on them?

In magazines and the media, I always see Fender/Fender style basses with a lot of paint chips and wear. This is trendy enough that many bass companies now offer rustic and road worn series basses. But what about the fancy top coffee table basses? Do any of you guys that own them have much cosmetic wear? Do you mind wear on your bass?

I was just curious about this as I never see a "boutique" looking instrument with excessive wear.

I don't mind a bit of normal wear in the right spots.

My Yamaha BB300 has some wear where I rest my right arm. I think wear depends on the finish. The laqured or epoxy like finishes are fairly bullet-proof, like the clearcoat on cars. Paint or stain-like finishes seem to wear more readily. I know people that give their basses "road - wear" on purpose. Not something I would do. Honestly, the finish on your bass, and your playing style have a great deal to do with any wear to the finish.

Other factors are whether or not the bass has a pickguard (and whether or not you use a pick). Finally, most who own "botique" basses take exceptional care of them and don't have an agressive playing style. Since those basses are usually serious coin, people are more apt to be gentle with them than one they paid $250 - $600 (as an example price range) for. Also, botique basses are often custom built... another reason to baby them. Just my two cents.

Doug Wimbish's Spector is pretty worn. I can't find a decent pic of it but check out some youtube vids of him and you can see the wear and you can see why it's worn. The dude is amazing.

My '64 EB-0 has finish lines and the odd small chip here and there...but I admit they're subtle enough to be hard to photograph. The most visible thing is hairline cracks in the finish after 47 years.

But then again - if there's any bass line that has been around long enough to be a candidate for relicing (besides Fender) Gibson would be it. Mine isn't a relic, it just shows age when you get a good look at it. I don't like chipped-up basses anyway.

I can't stand when my basses get wear and tear on them. Especially dents, dings, and gouges. If one of my main basses finishes were to wear down to the point of seeing the wood, then it would get refinished asap, providing it were cost efficient to what I paid for it.

the wear on my old BSR6GN was pretty hot... one of the reasons I bought it in the first place... Sold it not long after though...
